I honestly don't think Portland is large enough to support MLB.

FWIW, the Portland metro (#23) is larger than these metros that currently have MLB teams:

Pittsburgh (#26)
Cincy (#28)
Kansas City (#29)
Cleveland (#31)
Milwaukee (#39)

Granted, those places have had teams for generations but Portland is plenty large, would have a great 81-game season ticket base and has the entire state of Oregon as a TV market.

Actually, Portland is, but Seattle did create quite a stink when Portland did try to put its name in the hat for the Expos relocation derby. But MLB wanted big bucks back then, and Washington, DC was big $$'s for MLB much like LA was big $$'s for the NFL. But Portland is large enough to support MLB though. But MLB wants to make sure it has all the big $$$ bases covered first. If the A's are going anywhere, it won't be to Portland, it will be to San Jose, even if the Giants squawk non-stop about it. San Jose has a huge untapped corporate base that the A's would love to tap, although the Giants claim San Jose as their territory. If Portland gets any MLB team, it will probably be an expansion team, more than likely. For information on the MLB to Portland effort, check out http://www.oregonstadiumcampaign.com

I thought A's have given up on San Jose. If the raiders and warriors are gone got to think the A's just redevelop their current site with a new stadium.

When John Fisher bought the A's, he brought in as a minority partner a developer who was a college frat buddy of Selig to try to get MLB to approve the A's in San Jose. Didn't work. MLB ruled the Giants "own" the rights to Santa Clara County and thus could either block the A's from San Jose or sell those rights to them. Rumor is that the Giants, while publicly saying they just wouldn't relinquish the rights, asked the A's to pay some ginormous amount and the A's walked away.

Agreed that the A's most likely move is to redevelop at the Coliseum site. IMO, after giving up on San Jose, the A's adopted a strategy which looks like it's going to play out for them: Wait for the Raiders and Warriors to leave, so that the A's are the only major team left there and have maximum leverage with the city/county, then get as much as you can at the Coliseum site, such as the right to develop and profit off of the outer parking lots and adjacent city-owned land, and the city/county paying for road and infrastructure improvements at the site.
