Actually, it makes sense if he can do a semester at a JUCO:
1). Plays his 2nd FB season at a JUCO.
2). Becomes a mid-year JUCO transfer (12/2017).
3). Does spring ball (2018) at EMU.
4). Plays for EMU 2018 and 19.
As we know, he'd have to sit out the 2017 FB season at EMU, so why not go JUCO, play a season and then transfer at mid-year so he can do spring ball?
EMU can use the scholarship of a player who won't return to EMU in fall 2017 (e.g., quit, transfers, academically ineligible, etc.). As we know there is always some turnover after say spring ball with players transferring because of playing time, want to be closer to home, academic issues, etc. etc.).
