Lester quote
I have the book Western Michigan Football by Mark Fricke, published in 1996 when Tim Lester was our QB coach (a picture of him from his playing days is on the cover).
In it Fricke quotes Lester thusly:
"Have a lot of gratitude for all the players that came before you that didn't have the same opportunities that you have today...I appreciate all those people who might not always get the recognition they deserve, (such as) the administration, training staffs, academic services, equipment staff, coaches."
Have to be able to get behind a coach like that, especially one who bleeds Brown and Gold.
Also - for those of you who may not be impressed with his HC record - St. Josephs IN and Elmhurst College are not exactly football powerhouses or schools, and he did very well at both.
He's a good hire for us, hope he does very well here, and fans don't get hung up on comparing him to his predecessor.

Well said and Tims quote gives a window in to his character and belief system.

RE: Lester quote
I will say that he is a great person and is exactly the personality I want as our head coach. He loves being here. And we won't ever have to worry about issues of integrity.
In those respects, I am happy he is our new coach.

I'm afraid that ship has already sailed, Major.
At least this time around though there's a predecessor worth comparing to. That in and of itself is a good thing.

I won't compare them personality wise. Because let's face it, Fleck is a hurricane, in both good and bad ways.
However, I am going to compare him to Fleck's success.
Bottom line, I don't care how you go about getting it done, because there are a lot of ways to be successful, but there are high expectations from the get go for Lester. Fair or not. He isn't walking into a mediocre MAC program. He is walking into a championship situation, and he needs to find a way to maintain this level, or at least close to it.
If he doesn't, he was the wrong guy. Plain and simple.

RE: Lester quote
Having a former QB and QB coach as HC right now is a good thing for WMU... We need to get our next QB up and running in the system ASAP... Sounds like Lester wants to commit to the run game first and foremost... For those (myself included) who thought Lester would be Cubit 2.0.... that right there is a huge sign that he's definitely not Cubit.

Sounds like Pinkham has a shot to stick around for sure. They are at the ball game together today. I hope he gives the holders on a shot, some decent recruiters and coaches.

True 'dat. With our RBs and memories of Sanford in his mind, yeah -- makes sense. Focus on the run game as the new QB game develops. Hope we get a good OC. Maybe Lester will take a page out of Cubit's book though and be OC + HC?

Yeah, I would say if he was interviewed for the HC position and he made our D respectable even on a non-G5 level, he definitely has a shot. Especially to keep the spirit going. Tough call though, as Shafer, although not a very good HC, is a Great DC.

It's been reported that Shafer will not be the DC....

RE: Lester quote
Pinkham and Bill Kenney were running the recruitment visit this weekend. You can't say enough about their commitment to WMU while not sure if they'll have a job next week.
I hope they stick, and Lester brings them aboard. I'm sure the players would appreciate it, too.
