The problem with this hire
is it is not a risk/reward type hire. With fleck when we were not happy about the hire we were an average to bad football team and we took a chance on a boom or bust guy.
This time we had our best season ever and now hire a guy that has 8-5 and 7-6 written all over him. Kathy said we had advanced past hiring gvsu and ferris states coach. Does she know that both have more impressive resumes than the guy she just hired (specifically Anesse).
I hope I am wrong and you guys can pull this thread out of the woodwork but Lester will never win a MAC championship here. Just all together disappointed that this is the best Kathy could do.

RE: The problem with this hire
I think the real problem with this hire is that some of the recruits that had just merely reopened their recruiting will more than likely head elsewhere. He is not bringing recruits with him. Which means we are going to have a SMALL class. We just lost out RB coach today, so now we are going to need to replace the strength of our offense and we now run the risk of needing a new defensive staff with is the strength of our team. Granted, none of this is founded, but it seems like a logical sequence of events.

I solemnly swear, if Coach Lester can bring in a QB that is more highly regarded than the one that followed Fleck, in the next 2 weeks, I will forgive Fleck all that I am currently resenting him for.

The hire feels very "meh" at the moment, but quite honestly who knows... he could do well. Giving him a solid chance (no other choice but to do so, anyhow).
And we can say our coach played against He Hate Me.

Like I said, nothing founded. I would LOVE to see what he can bring to the table. If he can bring in a half-dozen or so more than are standing firm, I would be more than happy and feel pretty confident that he will be a strong recruiter for us. However, in the eyes of these kids on the fence...they were recruited by steak. Steak just left and they are hanging out to wait and see. Some of them just want a meal and will be happy that things are settled. If nothing else, they have to feel good that they have a coach that is in it for them for the long haul. The rest, just got meatloaf.
FWIW-Terrell, Lester, Hiller, Carder...my all-time favorite WMU QB's in that order. Although, I really liked Jay McD. Had him in a bunch of classes and was a fun guy to be around. Ran into him out in Iowa at an Arena League game back in the day and he remembered me in an instant. Very genuine dude :)

Not me. I'll bother me less looking back on it, but that would be of no doing by Fleck, hence, it wouldn't change what he did altogether. I separate the level of blame & the level of how I upset I am about it. BUT, in the end, I don't have real hate or anything toward PJ. I'm just ticked & disappointed. If he came out and explained why & how what he did and how it wasn't as crass as one may think, sending us his condolences, and in all honesty wishing us the best since we don't play each other, etc etc -- then I wouldn't be.

I think if we start out 1-3 in OOC play, he may have to wear that XFL jersey!

Yeah, I'm curious. I'm not all sorrows. The way things started played out, I didn't Expect an optimal hire. I'm excited to see what he can do. He's had a coaching career thus far, and this is his Big Stage. His Big Chance. He couldn't get us to beat Marshall in that MACC game -- but he can make up for it now! :)

Western has been gifted with some real Blue Collar type QB's. None with great stats, but they got the job done on the field most of the time. I'd add Brad Tayles onto that mix, but he was probably before most of you were born.

Both the Grand Valley and Ferris guys weren't good fits for WMU. Let's see what Lester can do before we judge him. He wasn't my first choice and thought Wheatley would have been a really good one. Supposedly, Lester has good recruiting connections around the Chicago area. Kathy interviewed Lester before she hired Fleck so she knows about him. Like all of us, I just hope the guy can recruit....not like Fleck but who can like Fleck did in the MAC? I know one thing....Lester better be pumping the Red Bull. The clock is ticking fast to Feb. 1st.

Would have been interesting to see what Carder would have done with the 2016 Bronco offense? The guy could throw....not always consistent...but he had an arm.

Carder was my first official man-crush. I loved watching that kid play and just throw his body into a hit when he would scramble. I just really enjoyed how he played the game...

Our passing game was short routes for the most part. Carder might not of been as effective as Zach. But definitely would of opened up more big shots.

RE: The problem with this hire
This kind of hire is uninspiring at best, however, after misjudging Fleck on his first year alone (and three years atoning for it), the jury is out for me until we see a couple years worth of on-field data.
We still have the talent for eight wins this fall.
