Cal Baptist to the WAC
This was covered in the WAC thread, but it seemed to deserve it's own thread.

http://www.midmajormadness.com/2017/1/13...conference

Congrats to Cal Baptist and kudos to the WAC for a positive announcement. Glad to see them live to see another day.

Good move for the WAC. Decent program with resources to compete. Fits the footprint (big as that is). GCU finishes its transition to DI, Cal Baptist starts theirs. Maybe land another already DI school to really stabilize things now?

It's still unconfirmed. But great news for the WAC if true.

NMSU is outta there if they ever get an offer from an FBS conference, or maybe even just a more solid no-football conference. Seattle leaves if they can ever get into the Big West or back into the WCC.

So the WAC will never be really stable, but this addition will make the conference more stable and help it to continue its niche as the western D-I conference of last resort.

This adds the LA area now to the WAC. Staying with the larger city model.

Have to wonder if TAMU CC or Univ New Orleans may be interested in moving to the WAC since there seems to be some stability now.

This certainly rules out UCSD and shows they are only interested in the Big West.

I always thought it was Big West or nothing for UCSD. Those are the schools they want to associate with.

UNO I can't see leaving the fairly compact Southland. They don't have a lot of resources.

Maybe TAMU CC to be a travel partner with UTGRV.

I'll throw Nebraska Omaha out there for a travel partner of UMKC. Not sure if they have any interest, but it would be a good fit for that.

Metro State out of Denver for another long term DII move up after CBU has fully transitioned.

They are the Atlantic Sun of the west coast for sure. I like to root for the underdog, so I am happy for them.

I think Big South is more of an appropriate analog.

---

This gives them another member. So there's that. But they're still a VERY unstable place

UTRGV is openly eying the Southland, NMSU is openly looking for the exits, Chicago State is in crisis, and UMKC is probably also looking for the door.

They need to find a couple of more teams. I count four teams in that conference that probably wont be in the WAC in 4 years.

Im not sure UCSD wants to associate with Grand Canyon Education, Inc.. either. No one is leaving any existing conference voluntarily to join the WAC.

Right. There's nothing on CBU's official Twitter stream, and if there's an announcement, I don't know why the school isn't getting ahead of that rather than letting some other guy run with it.

Same goes for UCSD and DBU.

Still, these are big things for schools. You don't want this on a Friday so that you can't put your program up to promote this news. If this is legit, I still think there's a swap, and that Chicago State is getting kicked out. And, honestly, kicking out a member IS something you would do a Friday night presser for.

I think UTRGV may be done eyeing the Southland. The WAC despite some stability issues, is a stronger athletic conference than the Southland and gets more revenue/school than any Southland school. Not to mention the Southland is way crowded for that type of conference.

If CBU is actually added....the WAC could develop a conference that was similar to the Big East with a mix of religious private and public schools. CBU would now add 3 of 9 schools in the conference (with GCU and SU as the other two).
This could eventually be developed into a secondary WCC conference for misc religious schools when NMSU decides what to do with itself.

Cal Baptist doesn't change a thing as far as WAC survival until 2023. Still needs full DI members or a swap schools with a bloated Big Sky.

The Friday afternoon announcement might be because the WAC doesn't want to draw attention to a Big Sky swap, yet.

Maybe Azusa Pacific should follow them to the WAC. They're a similarly sized school (I think) with success at other levels of collegiate athletics.

per Commish Jeff Hurd.

Was introduced to Cal Baptist last summer and been back and forth since then.

CSU-B helped play a role with Cal Baptist decision.

Commissioners always fib.

Cal Baptist went to DII years ago because they knew the WAC would have openings.

It is building a new arena because they were sure of DI then. It wasn't built for DII.

The WAC and Big Sky have plans to swap schools and that HS been evident ever since the WAC took on many Great West schools.
