So the moral of the day is: government services are necessary and it's correct to fund them via tax dollars. Sounds good, thanks for creating the thread to reaffirm that. 03-thumbsup

some government services...some....

I don't think anyone would argue with that...well a few would, but they are extremist loons.

The difference between the right and left is more about the number of and size of government services. For me it's police, fire, military, schools (ok with voucher system), college assitance very good. Medicare/medicaid good. Eternal welfare and housing for able bodied people...BAD

Social Security...broken

He can't handle nuance.

There's actually an HBO pilot that either has been filmed or will be filmed called "Mogadishu, Minnesota".

Minnesota is not Somalia. The question still stands...

I was making a joke that a supposed anarcho-capitalist paradise, like Somalia, must be better than a dictatorship like the USA.

The operative word is "supposed." Somalia is nothing remotely approaching an anarcho-capitalist paradise. The capitalist part requires a market economy which is nonexistent in Somalia. Nothing in this story in any way constitutes advocacy of anarchy. And for that matter, even most anarchists support some minimum rule of law, which does not exist in Somalia. For that matter, the rule by warlord that exists in much of Somalia is the absolute extreme opposite of anarcho-capitalism.

This whole concept of Somalia as a libertarian or anarcho-capitalist paradise is a blatant lie created by those who seek to marginalize ideas that they lack either the intellect or the integrity to discuss objectively.

SOME government services are in fact necessary. The fact that some government services are necessary does not mean that ALL government services are necessary.

The fact that highways and national defense are necessary does not mean that income and wealth equalization are necessary.

Your generous tax dollars help to support the benefits given by the state of Minnesota to Islamist Somalis living here.

That makes me very, very happy. 03-thumbsup 03-thumbsup

No one advocates for wasteful, unfair, or fraudulent use of government assistance.

Clearly that doesn't justify annihilating all forms of human decency and compassion.

So you must agree that we should fix social security.

I know that you are a passionate anti-government libertarian, borderline anarcho-capitalist. So I can understand how you get emotional when folks with normal preferences and ideals for governmental policy are dismissive of yours.

But it is very much fact that Somalia was in a state of anarchy.

Yes, that's correct. Did you have something intellectual to add to the discussion?

But not capitalist anarchy. War-lord anarchy. Which is not what anarcho-capitalists have in mind.

There is nothing remotely approaching a free-market economy in Somalia. The principle behind anarcho-capitalism is that the market takes care of a lot of things better than government can. That can't happen in Somalia. The other idea is maximum individual freedom. The individual freedoms that are the basis upon which anarcho-capitalists build their ideal society, do not come remotely close to existing under the control of war lords. Anybody who thinks that individual freedom in maximized in Somalia, or even that it exists there at all, is sadly misinformed.

If you lack the perception skills necessary to see that distinction, I'm sorry.

The fact that Bison and those like her believe this kind dribble speaks volumes to their ideology. Really scary IMO.

I can just imagine it now:

"Uhhh ... ermm .... excuse me mr. warlord guy. My name is Jim. I'm the head of the local Anarcho-Capitalist Board of Directors. You are in violation of our ideals. See, we believe that the market ---"

*Warlord slices Jim in half, laughs loudly*

There is only one type of anarchy. The one where a warlord takes over and forces you to pay him. Survival of the fittest.

The other is a fairytale.

Wealth redistributes itself naturally through the exchange of value for labor. When the government intervenes it set up artificial winners. There has to be LABOR given in order to receive a reward of value. Giving people stuff because we feel sorry for them(or want their vote) has subverted the natural order of economic theory. There is nothing wrong with us having a safety net for everyone. I support that. What I oppose is a system that rewards people more for doing NOTHING than they can receive through the fruits of their own labor.

One of the things I hope this administration does is bring back the Workfare programs of Bill Clinton. Obama fully dismantled them during his tenure. That was a giant mistake. Those programs help lot's of people out of the cycle of institutional welfare.
