Bob Stull ( UTEP AD) open letter to basketball fans

I've never seen this before but Utep's AD has felt the need to give fans the heads up with what is wrong with UTEP Basketball.

And at the same time he apparently concedes to a notion that an at large bid is out of the question.

The man has done what I thought would never happened. He has turned die hard UTEP fans against the program.

We are more pi$$ed than ever due to this letter. What a crock. The AD must go so that one with energy, even just a pulse, can get something done. First priority for a new AD would be to get rid of Floyd and the second would be to put the FB coach on notice that this coming season better be a winner or he's gone. 5 years for a FB coach to turn things around is enough and this will be his 5th year. 7 years for a basketball coach to trend downhill is way too much.

One thing the letter indicates to me is that the emails from frustrated fans have had an effect. Enough of one to get him to at least let us know he is still alive. Barely.

Ol' Sponge Bob Stull Pants was shaking hands with the season ticket holders after the last couple WBB games. He hasn't done that in a long time.

Dear Miner fans,

As you know this has been a difficult year for UTEP basketball, and no one is more frustrated than coach Keitha Adams, coach Tim Floyd and our players.

In the previous three seasons (2013-16) coach Adams produced two 29-win campaigns, but the loss of seven seniors has made this a rebuilding year. In the previous three seasons coach Floyd’s Miners registered 23, 22 and 19 victories, but this year they lost three of their most talented and productive players.

Both coaches have averaged 20 wins a season since they took the helm of the program. Twenty wins used to be a good barometer for getting a team into the NCAA Tournament, but now the only way to guarantee a bid is to win the conference tournament. This is true for all the “Group of Five” conferences – C-USA, AAC, MAC, Mountain West and the Sun Belt. Only one team from the “Group of Five” received an at-large bid last year, and that came from the AAC.

We are fortunate that we have a basketball-savvy fan base that cares and expects to be playing for championships. I want to thank all of you who continue to support our coaches and team during this difficult period. We have led the conference in attendance every year, which gives us a chance to win at home and also attract top recruits. Which, I am pleased to say, has gone well.

Coach Floyd has signed seven new players for next year. One, Evan Gilyard from Chicago, is listed by Rivals.com as one of the biggest steals of the early signing period. He scored 32 points on 13 shots in a recent game in Memphis. Other recruits include Kobe Magee (outstanding guard from San Antonio, ranked #10 recruit in Texas), burly 6’9” forward Tirus Smith, smooth 6’7” junior college forward Roderick Williams, and two players currently enrolled at UTEP in 6’7” guard Isiah Osborne and 6’8” forward Trey Wade. Coach Adams has seven freshmen that are supremely talented but lacking college experience. They are getting better each day.

I can assure you that both Coach Adams and Coach Floyd are working harder than ever to get UTEP back on the winning road. We have great young men and women on our teams that are giving their best each day in practice to improve. I am asking our fans to continue to support these student-athletes in the same passionate manner that visiting teams have come to expect– making the Don Haskins Center one of the toughest places to play in college basketball! Strong fan support and a loud Haskins Center is what we need to help get back on track.

We will continue to do all we can to enhance the game-day experience. I hope to see you at the Haskins Center for all the games, but keep an eye out especially for the men’s games versus UTSA on Jan. 21 (halftime performance by Air Elite Dunk team) and UAB on Feb. 2 (Jeep Jackson Tribute Night).

Thanks again for your support and Go Miners!

Bob Stull

Good thing you have a variety of PAC 12 teams to root for when life gets rough around Miner land.

We all knew that, at the core of the matter, it is the fault of you less-than-passionate Miner fans. 05-nono

Being facetious, of course. You have our sympathies and best wishes for getting past what is very clearly a failure of leadership. You guys are too good a program not to be immediately back on your feet as soon as that is solved.

So what he's saying is that Floyd has a demonstrated pattern of declining total wins, right?

Out of Sight, Out of Mind, Out of Touch and Out of Idea's...

I truly feel sorry for UTEP. This letter may have been written from the EMAILS and letters he has received. But it basically says no matter what Tim Floyd will be on the bench next season.

Floyd's tactics of coaching may have worked even 5 years ago but to me I think they are out of date. Ive never heard Floyd be a teacher of the game, from what Ive heard he just tells you what you are suppose to do and you go do it, even id you don't understand it. Then he screams at you if you do it wrong or not to his liking.

And players leave at the drop of a hat because they can't stand Floyd. But Floyd isn't going to fire himself. The real problem is the AD. Any competent AD would have canned Floyd a couple of seasons ago.

Miner fans just need to be patient with Floyd. In the next couple of years, making the tournament will be the expectation for Miner basketball. The CUSA Tournament.

That letter is horseshit. I can't believe he even wrote it. Amazing, truly amazing. But just like HerdZoned mentioned, this letter is on its face justification to keep Floyd on board and it's gut wrenching.

Unfortunately I'm afraid you're right. Floyd isn't going anywhere and we might have a couple of single win season before the plug is pulled. The next coach might take a few years to rebuild the shipif we are lucky to hire someone good. As for football I don't know if we will ever be good.
