The shade of blue is darker too, so all they'd have to do is outline it in yellow.

Really good stuff out there on twitter right now. Chargers getting roasted for this. Just how terrible can Spanos and Chargers management make themselves look?

I think the Dodgers + Lightning thing nailed it. Look, it's both uncreative AND unattractive. They need to fix it immediately but they won't because there's too much ego involved and admitting a mistake is unacceptable.

We. Don't. Want. You.

I generally find Plaschke insufferable but today, his column is spot on. This is a bad move; there's a reason other owners were trying to convince him to stay in SD. I understand he's counting on LA to jump his team's valuation but a lot of that new equity gets eaten up by $650MM in relocation debt. And if he ends up with 40K in attendance at Kroenkeville? This whole thing will be a wash for Spanos and a big negative for the NFL.

After this shitshow how many SD locals are going to drive up to LA for a Chargers game at an MLS-sized stadium, let alone a game in Inglewood where the tix will cost $200 ea in the peanut gallery? Not this guy...

It's a real question how much this decision is driven by the prospect of profit in LA versus how much it's driven by spite towards many different groups, including...

San Diego: Obviously. But not just the act of "You wouldn't give me $1 billion for a new stadium, so goodbye." It's the timing of it. The NFL gave Spanos an extension until next Tuesday to announce his move precisely because they didn't want him doing exactly what he did: Announcing it at 8 am today and then immediately flying up to LA right before the San Diego mayor has to give his annual "State of the City" address at 10 am as The Mayor Who Lost The Chargers.

The NFL: Spanos was hoping the NFL would contribute a few hundred million toward a San Diego stadium to close the gap between the city's offer and the small amount the Chargers were willing to chip in. When the NFL showed no interest in that and didn't even put the request on their agenda for this week's meeting, Spanos skipped the NFL meeting and called Goodell shortly after it was over to tell him he was moving the franchise. (And as noted above, Spanos ignored the deadline extension that Goodell gave him, and went ahead and announced this morning to embarrass the mayor.)

Kroenke: Spanos probably dislikes and resents Kroenke more than anyone else, and reserves his greatest act of spite for Stan -- becoming the permanent unwanted tenant in Inglewood, even if the Chargers never sell more than 30,000 seats except when they play the Raiders.

I agree Spanos probably hates Kroenke the most, but his reason would be completely misplaced. At the end of the day Dean is simply rich people broke. Even if he were allowed to move to LA, he couldn't bankroll a stadium by himself. Spanos essentially wanted to move north and increase the Chargers value to $1B USD and for the rest of the owners to chip in and build him a stadium facility in LA.

Hopefully zero.

San Diego residents don't deserve to get to watch an NFL team. Hopefully the seat license fees at the new stadium will get most SD residents to drop their season tickets, so that LA residents can pick them up.

Why don't they deserve to watch a team? They've only supported it for decades.

At the very least, they should have shared Levi's Stadium with the 49ers but their pride got in the way (they could always move back to Oakland/East Bay later).

They did jump at the chance to be LA's team, but the NFL wouldn't let them because the NFL hates the Davis family with a passion!!! As for sharing Levi's stadium, both the Raiders and the Niners mutually detest each other, so that wouldn't work either. The Niners would love to have the entire Bay Area to themselves.

You do what have to. Better than playing in the Coliseum. It might as well be the Roman one. You don't have to like your roommate, just coexist and try not pissing each other off. And as I said...they could always move to LA or back to the East Bay later.

There are reports that the Chargers will re-brand with the move to LA. I suggest that the new name be the Hollywood Hypocrites and the new colors be pink and lavender.

I can't imagine that Kroenke would want another blue and gold/yellow team in his stadium.

Sure, if they're willing to drive up to Inglewood, of course they can watch.

They're not going away...except from San Diego. I can see them pulling a Raiders and moving back in less than a generation. They'd be wise to write in an escape clause a la the Rams in St. Louis.

No way. Dean Spanos has committed to pay the NFL $650 million (over 10 years) to move to LA and is taking out bank loans for half that amount (already approved by the NFL). If I was a Spanos family member/co-owner, and he tried to move them back after burning $650 million of my family's money, I'd get the family together to have him removed from management for gross financial incompetence.

The Forbes guesstimate of NFL team values says that $65 million annual payment on the relocation fee is more than the estimate of Chargers' annual net profit. So they're not making so much profit as to be able to throw away $65 million/year for 10 years. (I suppose this is why Spanos got permission to take out a loan to borrow half of the relocation fee -- the franchise doesn't have enough annual cash flow to comfortably pay the league $65 million each year.)

The relocation fee can only be justified, financially, by the increase in franchise sale price for being in LA instead of SD, which means it would be an inexcusable waste of 10 years' franchise profits to move to LA and then move back to SD.

The chargers could move back if the NFL waived the relocation fee and probably stoped any payment due for moving to LA, i.e. Say 5 years down the road the chargers want to move back.

That is the kind of situation that makes me think the Packers are the supreme franchise in the league. What happens in Green Bay is really amazing.
