MyBB What happened to UTEP?
Pink Floyd quit after a 1-5 start and loss to Lamar. UTEP football finished 0-12 and the very worst team in FBS by ESPN. I was looking at the complete list of basketball teams and I saw that UTEP was ranked in the 300's...one of the very worst teams in all of Division 1! How is this possible? UTEP historically has been a very good program with great fan support with Haskins, then later on had some good teams in the WAC and CUSA...what's happening there now?

Cheers!

What happened to UTEP? You already mentioned it...Tim Floyd is the coach. Time has past him by.

RE: What happened to UTEP?
UTEP was helped a LOT in the WAC days from the fact it was a Top 8 basketball conference year in and out.

CUSA is 25th in the RPI rankings this year. Ouch. This conference is a real need of a make over.

Lot's of unrest and unhappiness in El Paso about all this. Tim Floyd's hire in 2010 was widely hailed by Miner fans since he had been an assistant under Haskins years ago. He has chased off more talent than anyone would have thought possible. Very few players seem to be able to tolerate him. He says that the current transfer "epidemic" is the cause and we shouldn't blame him. We are all dumbfounded by his consistent loss of players after they arrive and after signing but before arriving. Our extremely slow to act AD just reminds us that Floyd has averaged 20 wins per season before this year. In other words, does not appear that a firing is coming at the end of the season but that is exactly what most of the fan base is hoping for.

Floyd was a good coach at Iowa St and I had heard he was back at UTEP, and had been there for awhile....ECU left CUSA a few years back so I haven't been following CUSA hoops. I just assumed UTEP would be at the top of CUSA now. Was shocked to see them ranked near the bottom of the country and CUSA as well....figured CUSA would be a top 12 conference in the rpi not 25th...I know I've said it before, but I'm going to ask it again, did UTEP really turn down a chance to join the MWC? Because if that's true, the AD needs to be sh!t canned along with Tim "Pink" Floyd. I'm sorry to see UTEP slip so far...
Cheers!

RE: What happened to UTEP?
Remember that Butler's toughest game to the national championship was a 2-point squeaker over the Miners.

That was the final year before Tim Floyd.

THAT'S how far they've fallen in one coaching hire.

You must have them mistaken for someone else they lost by 18.

Thanks. I was thinking of Murray State, who Butler defeated by 2 in the game after UTEP.

The point about Floyd still stands though. Yes UTEP lost by 18 in that game after leading at the half. Butler rained down 3's in the second half and took the game over. Very good Butler team. But Floyd came in and inherited a lot of the same players, got to the C-USA title game and lost a tight one to Memphis. NIT 1st round loss and it's been down hill since. Floyd needs to go and should have been gone a couple of years ago.

RE: What happened to UTEP?
What happened to UTEP? We for some reason like to keep incompetent people longer than most places. It happened with Mike Price, it's happening with Floyd and I'm afraid it'll happen with Sean Kugler as well (football). But I don't blame them for keeping their jobs. I blame AD Bob Stull for being too complacent and not being more proactive. He did a lot of good things the first 10 years but he's just been going downhill since then. It'll be 20 years next year since he took over and his time is already up. If you're not a Tom Jurich type of AD, 20 years is a long time for a below average, mediocre at best AD even in a place like UTEP.

I've always believed UTEP advantages that the vast majority of G5s and a few P5s wish they had. But until we get an AD who's ready to do his job instead of collecting a check, we will be in mediocrity for a long time.

As for UTEP declining the MWC, it happened but I don't really blame our AD for that given the time frame when it happened. It's the ready San Jose State is in the MWC. They took our spot when the invites were sent to Utah State and UTEP.

So far this year the avg is 5,859 which is bad by UTEP standards and 2nd place behind ODU in attendance.

Last year was 7,385 and tops in C-USA but down from 8,458 in 2015 and so on. The trend is heading in the wrong direction but our AD seems oblivious to it.

New Mexico St beat UTEP 41-14 tonight. UTEP is 0-4. What is happening down in El Paso? I figured you guys would be one of the top CUSA West teams...at least a Bowl team when SMU, Tulsa, Houston and Tulane left your side of CUSA...
Thoughts?

Even the C-USA they entered was an okay conference. That said, they should transcend the conference they play in. There's no reason they can't be in the NCAA's every few years.

They gave the FB coach an extension for going 7-6. He's gone 2-10, 7-6, 5-7, 4-8, now 0-4.

Amazing venue. Loyal following. Hopefully El Paso bounces back and ends up MW.
