Former Baylor Stud, Darryn Sheppard, Joins Rice Baseball
As reported awhile back, former Baylor power-hitting stud (graduate transfer), OF/1B Darryn Sheppard, will enroll in January, and has now been added to the 2017 roster...

2014:Academic All Big 12 Rookie Team
2015:Academic All Big 12 First Team
2016:Avg=.294 Slg=.480 Ob=.380

...last year he led Baylor in both HRs (8) and RBIs (40).

Great addition, but I'm not sure where he cracks the lineup, unless as DH. Sure, he's a better hitter than Wunderlich (both are right-handed batters), but I know Wayne loves Dayne's speed and OF defense. And remember, we also have JUCO transfer and left-hand, power-hitting Chase Sarchet looking for playing time. I do think this means that Dane Myers will not be in the offensive lineup when pitching. Other than that, the competition for LF playing time and DH (Lammons, in addition to Sarchet and Sheppard) will be intense...and it does provide us with the OF depth we lacked last year when Warren and Wunderlich went down. It also adds depth at 1B beyond Myers and Moss.

Note-- Ford Proctor led the team in RBIs last year with 41, and no other player had more than 28. If Sheppard demonstrates he can replicate last year's power numbers, not sure how we keep him out of our everyday lineup. The only negative on the guy is that he struck out 41 times last year vs. only 13 BBs. I can see him as our everyday DH, as I still think Wunderlich gets the nod in LF; perhaps platooning with Sarchet when facing elite RHPs.

This is great news!

Wayne gets the benefit of the doubt that our pitching will always be there. The hitting has been the question mark for a few years now, and Sheppard is a huge plus.

If he works out and we can find an every-day slot for this player, we could have one of our best offensive teams in years.

I'd say he's definitely in the starting lineup somewhere, he's the best player from a big 12 team. Why not 1B? We haven't had any power there in a long time and he's immediately our biggest power hitter.

Side note: Is There a reason we never play Baylor in baseball midweek?

How many years will he be with us, just one year?

I'm confused. I thought we concluded during the Texas Tech MBB game thread that using grad transfers constitutes unfair play that puts young opposing rosters at a competitive disadvantage.

He only hit .181 in conference play last year so yes, I'm sure he'll have to earn a starting spot on the Rice roster. But it's a nice thing to get graduate transfers as those are kids who obviously are great students. And he's a former Dulles Viking who played for Clinton Welch and we've certainly had a nice history of Dulles kids doing nice things at Rice.

This was already going to be the case even without Sheppard.

Myers is going to play 1B when he's not pitching. He was our second best hitter this past Fall, and is a plus defender. I think Sheppard is our everyday DH, and provides depth in case of OF injury. It allows DiCaprio to take the day off when he's not catching.

It was a mutual decision to stop the mid-weeks with Baylor due to the distant travel required.

Odd given that we play them with TCU, TxST, DBU, etc, which aren't really any closer, and actually further in the case of TCU and DBU.

Didn't Baker 13 run the bases against Baylor?

Stating that an older player used his experience to beat younger players doesn't mean it's "unfair". If you don't have anything useful to add sometimes it's just better to not say anything....
