Well, the actual NCAA web site calls them the "FCS Champions", so I think my wording is correct.

Equal ground? There are non-scholarship programs, not every conference is an auto qualifier, only one or two get any TV money at all. There's a bigger divide between the haves and have-nots than the FBS.

IIRC, the only conferences that don't have an auto-bid are the MEAC, SWAC, and Ivy League, and all three of them lack auto-bids because they have chosen not to send their champion to the FCS playoffs, not because an auto-bid was denied to them.

The Pioneer no scholarship league just got an autobid when FCS playoffs expanded to 24.

The Ivy League objects to playoffs, so they don't participate.

The MEAC and SWAC can still send teams, but not their champions, which go to the Celebration Bowl. NC A&T was a playoff team this year.

Wasn't there a JMU professor who wrote a piece advocating for the abolishment of Dukes football? And then he even registered on the JMU board here and went at it with posters?

So what? Being good at sports doesn't mean it's necesarily a good idea to have them.

Unless his argument for abolishing Dukes football was that it could never win another FCS title, or otherwise succeed on the field in FCS, I'm not sure he's been refuted.

Yes, I know about the SWAC and MEAC situations. I was just talking about auto-bids, and by their choice they don't have one, though non-champs are eligible for at-large selection.
