RE: Kent Golfers in the Pros - 2017 edition
Looking like a promising weekend.

On the PGA Tour, Mackenzie Hughes is tied for 18th. The Greenbrier is a qualifyiing tournament for the (British) Open, so if Mackenzie can finish in the top 4 (among those not already qualified), he would qualify.

On the web.com Tour, Yip is tied for 4th and Conners is tied for 23rd. Yip need a high finish or two to move into the top 75 and the chance of getting the PGA Tour card in the web.com playoffs. Conners is not out of contention for finishing in the Top 25 and getting the PGA card outright, but he hasn't been playing top notch golf this summer and could use a good tournament.

And finally Brett Cairns is tied for 30th and very likely to make the cut on the Mackenzie Tour.

On the web.com tour, Conners and Yip will go into the final round tied for 6th, 5 shots behind the leader.

Hughes is tied for 32nd after the third round in WV.

Cairns is tied for 33rd in the Great White North.

Hughes finished tied for 20th and continues to play consistent, very solid golf on the PGA tour.

Conners finished tied for 9th and Yip slipped to tied for 29th. It's a shame because Yip really needs a good tournament, but he has had bad days on Sundays a few times this season.

Cairns finished tied for 45th.

This week:

Curtis withdrew from the Open Championship (couldn't find why) and everyone else didn't make the cut.

Check back next week

Mackenzie Hughes is playing the WGC-Bridgestone, not well mind you, but there is no cut, so this is a benefit of winning a tournament. He is currently tied for 69th.

Taylor Pendrith and Brett Cairns are playing the Syncrude Oil Championship and above the cut line after the 1st round.

Ryan Yip is playing the web.com event and at the cut line. No Conners this week.

A thought about Stephan Curry playing a web.com event. The first round was definitely a solid effort and I think he showed he can hang in there with the big boys of golf. I have no problem with it and see it similar to say Antonio Gates or Kenny Lofton playing in an NBA D League game. He is an all-time great in another sport, but is good enough to go out there and play with top basketball players. Plus, it's kind of fun to watch.

Hughes is near the bottom in Akron.

Yip missed the cut by 1 stroke.

Pendrith and Cairns made the cut in Canada. Danny Sahl was also playing (first event this year) and he didn't make the cut.

It's one for five this week with making cuts.

* Corey Conners roared back from an opening round trainwreck to shoot 8 under in the second round and land on the cut line. Hopefully, he has a two more great rounds in his bag and can play himself into contention.

RE: Kent Golfers in the Pros - 2017 edition
Another yuck weekend.

* Conners missed the cut and Yip made the cut on the web.com tour. Yip desperately needs a very strong finish to improve his standing to make the web.com tour playoffs and a chance at the PGA tour. He is tied for 29th right now. Conners is assured of making the playoffs.

* Cairns and Pendrith missed the cut in the great white north.

* Hughes is not playing.

Yip shot 7 under today and is tied for third with a few left on the course for the 3rd round. Another good round will push him towards the web.com tour playoffs.

RE: Kent Golfers in the Pros - 2017 edition
Ok, Hughes and Conners makes cuts and finish middle of the pack.

It's playoff time.

Hughes finished the regular year 34th in Fed Ex Cup standings, which is very impressive for the rookie. Even without the win, he would have finished 96th, so he really played very solid golf throughout the season. He has a very good chance to go far in the Fed Ex Cup playoffs, so it will be exciting to watch.

Corey Conners finished 49th in the Order of Merit, which means he makes the web.com playoffs. These are reserved for the Top 75 on the web.com tour and 126th-175th on the PGA Tour. Of those 125 golfers, the Top 25 from the web.com tour have earned PGA cards for next year. Excluding those, the Top 25 from the 4 tournament playoffs will also earn the PGA card. A Top 10 finish is usually enough, and Conners could certainly pull that off.

Ryan Yip finished out of the top 100 in the web.com tour rankings and will not make the playoffs. He has to be disappointed and, despite at times playing very solid golf, never put together 4 good rounds in a tournament to earn a high finish. He'll have to go to Q School to earn back his web.com card.

FedEx Cup playoffs: Hughes is tied for 22nd in the Dell Technologies Championship after the first round.

Web.com playoffs: Conners makes the cut and is tied for 41st in the Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship.

Canada: Pendrith and Sahl miss the cut.

RE: Kent Golfers in the Pros - 2017 edition
Corey Conners will finish very close to tied for 13th and earn around $18K. That is a nice start to the web.com playoffs.

I checked and this was the money earned by the 25th place finisher in the last four years:

$27,425 2016
$32,206 2015
$36,312 2014
$33,650 2013

In 2016, there were only 3 tournaments because of a Hurricane that was going to hit near one of the tournament sites, resulting in a cancellation. So, Conners will be a little more than half way there after the first tournament.

Hughes is off to a good start and is tied for 13th in middle of the 3rd round of the PGA tournament.

Hughes finished tied for 13th in the first of four FedEx playoff tournaments. This is a big deal because FedEx Cup points during the playoffs are worth 4x what they are during the regular season. He has moved up to 31st in the Fed Ex Cup standings.

The two critical points are to finish in the Top 70 (which Hughes is guaranteed) and Top 30. Top 70 qualifies for the 2nd to last playoff tournament and guarantees that Hughes can play in certain invitational tournaments (like the Memorial). Top 30 means making the Tour Championship and guarantees playing in all the majors and WGC events.

Thanks for the info - it has been fun following him this year - if he can just avoid those occasional double bogies now!

Hughes has had a heckuva a year and month or so now. I really am impressed with how well he played on the PGA Tour. Even if you drop the win, it's been a really solid year and, of course, the win.

Moving forward, in Great White North Action this week, Ryan Yip joins Pendrith and Cairns at the Greater Ontario Championship (or something like that). Yip will make the cut at tied for 24th; Pendrith will likely miss and Cairns will definitely miss.

Ryan Yip 74-65-76-68-283.

Two great rounds, two crap rounds (by professional standards) - Tie for 39th.

BMW Championship: Hughes goes into the weekend tied for 12th. This is the final tournament before the Tour Championship and only the top 30 in Fed Ex points make it. Hughes is currently on the bubble at 31st in the Fed Ex point standings.

Boise Open (web.com): Conners made the cut and is tied for 42nd. Since this is essentially a 4 tournament scrabble, anything helps, and only good things can happen when you make the cut.

Hughes had a crummy day and will finish around T44, which means he won't be playing in the Tour Championship. Still an excellent rookie year.

Conners will finish around T30 and will earn another $6K, pushing him closer to a PGA card, but he will have to keep playing well over the next two weeks.
