Recruiting Retrospective
When looking back at our past recruiting classes it seems to be somewhat of a miracle how well the team has done considering that there were four straight years, 2011 through 2014, of what I would call sporadic recruiting results. Two of those years, 2011 and 2013, were the first for new coaches Doeren and Carey respectively and you always get some recruiting interruptus with a coaching change. Here are the major contributors from each year:

2011
QB Matt McIntosh
RB Leighton Settle
TE None
WR Tommylee Lewis
WR Juwan Brescacin
OL Andrew Ness
OL Aidan Conlon
DE Jason Meehan
DE Cameron Clinton-Earl
DT None
LB Boomer Mays
LB Rock Lemon
CB Paris Logan
CB Jhony Faustin
S None
P/K Tyler Wedel

This class brought little to no production from the QB, RB, TE, DT and S positions. Also, about half of these guys were Kill recruits so Doeren didn't "kill" his first class by any means.

2012
QB Drew Hare
RB Keith Harris
TE Desroy Maxwell
WR Clay Glasper
OL Levon Myers
OL Josh Ruka
OL Lincoln Howard
DE Perez Ford
DE Ladell Fleming
DT Ken Bishop
DT Corey Thomas
DT Mario Jones
LB None
CB Anthony Brooks
S Marlon Moore
P/K None

Doeren's staff did better here although Glasper and Brooks were mostly backups and we got no linebackers so there were three positions without much added firepower. They also had bad luck with Hare and Harris's injury problems.

2013
QB Anthony Maddie
RB Joel Bouagnon
RB Jordan Huff
TE Shane Wimann
WR Chad Beebe
WR Aregeros Turner
OL None
DE Austin Smaha
DT William Lee
LB Sean Folliard
LB Bobby Jones
LB Jamaal Payton
CB None
S Mycial Allen
S Brandon Mayes
P/K Josh Orne

Not too bad considering this was Carey's first class but it brought a QB who started a total of 4 games, no offensive linemen, a defensive end who was a backup until his senior year (although Smaha did play well last fall), and no corners.

2014
QB Ryan Graham
RB None
TE Ty Harmston
WR Kenny Golladay
WR Christian Blake
OL Max Scharping
OL Luke Shively
OL Shane Evans
DE None
DT Ben Compton
LB Renard Cheren
LB Jawaun Johnson
LB Alex Schwab
CB Shawun Lurry
CB Mayomi Olootu
CB Albert Smalls
S None
P/K Christian Hagan

The jury is still out on this class but so far Graham has been uneven and we got nothing from runningback, defensive end and safety, and our only defensive tackle (Compton), while a good player, was a JUCO and gone in two years.

Here's the position by positon view.

Quarterback
2011 Matt McIntosh
2012 Drew Hare
2013 Anthony Maddie
2014 Ryan Graham

Runningback
2011 Leighton Settle
2012 Keith Harris
2013 Joel Bouagnon, Jordan Huff
2014 None

Tight End
2011 None
2012 Desroy Maxwell
2013 Shane Wimann
2014 Ty Harmston

Wide Receiver
2011 Tommylee Lewis, Juwan Brescacin
2012 Clay Glasper
2013 Chad Beebe, Aregeros Turner
2014 Kenny Golladay, Christian Blake

Offensive Line
2011 Andrew Ness, Aidan Conlon
2012 Levon Myers, Josh Ruka, Lincoln Howard
2013 None
2014 Max Scharping, Luke Shively, Shane Evans

Defensive End
2011 Jason Meehan, Cameron Clinton-Earl
2012 Perez Ford, Ladell Fleming
2013 Austin Smaha
2014 None

Defensive Tackle
2011 None
2012 Ken Bishop, Corey Thomas, Mario Jones
2013 William Lee
2014 Ben Compton

Linebacker
2011 Boomer Mays, Rock Lemon
2012 None
2013 Sean Folliard, Bobby Jones, Jamaal Payton
2014 Renard Cheren, Jawuan Johnson, Alex Schwab

Cornerback
2011 Paris Logan, Jhony Faustin
2012 Anthony Brooks
2013 None
2014 Shawun Lurry, Mayomi Olootu, Albert Smalls

Safety
2011 None
2012 Marlon Moore
2013 Mycial Allen, Brandon Mayes
2014 None

Punter/Kicker
2011 Tyler Wedel
2012 None
2013 Josh Orne
2014 Christian Hagan

As I said at the top, it's hard to win with inconsistent recruiting. More recent classes seem to have gotten more consistent and the 2017 class looks great on paper so let's hope that continues.

The effect of these classes is still being felt today. The 2013 and 14 recruiting classes are this year's juniors and seniors who should be the heart of your team. Here is what we have remaining from those classes who will be on the team this fall:

QB Ryan Graham
RB Jordan Huff
TE Ty Harmston
WR Chad Beebe, Christian Blake
OL Max Scharping, Luke Shively, Shane Evans
DE None
DT William Lee
LB Renard Cheren, Jawuan Johnson, Alex Schwab
CB Shawun Lurry, Mayomi Olootu, Albert Smalls
S Mycial Allen, Brandon Mayes
K/P Christian Hagan

Some other guys could join the list but that's a pretty light haul from two recruiting classes.

RE: Recruiting Retrospective
Zero O-linemen in 2013 is what stands out the most to me. The line has been average at best for the last two years. This created a negative domino effect throughout the rest of the offense.

RE: Recruiting Retrospective
Can we please bring in some quality kickers.
Watching the WMU kicker on kickoffs putting it through the end zone is exactly what we need.
a 40 yard punt average would be awesome.

Mike Salerno was solid in his two years here. Dependable kicker who was outstanding at executing the onside kick. Had a huge blunder in the Independence Bowl when he kicked off to Phillip Livas and it was returned for a TD.

Sims was solid too other than that bizarre meltdown the end of his senior year. Made some of the biggest kicks in NIU history

Agree...Made some solid kicks but he did miss the last extra point try.

True freshman out of OK. ....(3 Stars)

RE: Recruiting Retrospective
Ever since our appearance in the Orange Bowl we should be leading our conference in 3* recruiting, especially with our facilities. However, I consistently see us ranked in the middle of the pack conference wise. I don't get it.

RE: Recruiting Retrospective
It's a real luxury to have a consistent kicker. One that consistently makes extra points and field goal. I don't care if they can kick out the end zone like Janikowski. When we had good kickers my we scored 40+ per game.......

I do not remember NIU ever getting a class ranked in the top 70?
Neither do I recall NIU ever recruiting two #1 MAC classes?
NIU has made a reputation on polishing unheralded recruits.

P.J. Has out recruited NIU without an Orange Bowl.
Now with a cotton Bowl and two heralded likely NFL draft picks which he is credited with polishing, maybe a top 50 class is within his reach.

Carey lacks the personality of PJ. Arguably personality works more than past wins.
A 1-11 PJ out-recruited a MAC champion.

In Carey's defense, he has a 65% win record, three trips to Detroit and 3-1 against both Toledo and WMU. This record was achieved without top recruits.

I look forward to another Carey successful year after this years set-back.
Carey has made a career of maximizing unheralded recruits.

He lacks the antics, charisma and energy of PJ, but has extended a dynasty for 3 years before last years 5-7 season.

How many current MAC Coach have been to Detroit three times?
I look forward to an 8 win season and a post season Bowl game this year.
Carey is 3-1 against PJ. How many other MAC Coaches are 3-1 against PJ?

If anyone can stop PJ next year it's Rod Carey.

Then again if Rod Carey has a consecutive losing season, this would be grounds for a buyout, [provided NIZ alumni jointly provide the cash].

Have to get the QB right. I do not mean a home run QB,but a net positive. Jordan Lynch ain't coming thru that door again, but healthy Drew Hares and you win. I very much appreciate that MAC title with Hare driving the bus.

Rod Carey has the charisma of a wet rock. He provides nothing to the community, the donor base, and is not even the face of our athletics (no idea who is, but it sure ain't Rod). These are major issues, especially in the G5.

Even that MAC title was with Toledo and BG both using backup QBs when we played them. BG was much different without Matt Johnson.

Doesn't mention injuries in the trophy case!

It doesn't, I just wonder if Hare would have been good enough in any other year.

What about Joshua Haldie?

He was no Ben Roethlisberger, but was solid and a great team leader.

If NIU can win OOC and get ranked, I will be pleased.

BG was definitely weaker without Johnson. However, BG won the east without him. He was injured in the 1st game of the year, so their starting QB in MACC that year had started 11 games prior to the MACC. That's a little different than us starting a walk on QB for his first start in the MACC the following year.
