Ok , I have only been coming down to the area every couple weeks to once a month since last March. I have always used Rt 13 Ches Bay Bridge/tunnel to get to ODU . How is that going to be come Sunday morning? Has it ever been closed before because of weather?

You guys who plan on driving are really underestimating how badly HR sucks when it comes to snow. The entire area shuts down for 2 inches. The highways will be "okay" but everything else is going to be horrible. We just don't have the trucks here, and we barely use salt - we use sand. Not good.

And to ya fellas up north - yeah, we get it, you have snow often. Which means your states have a nice budget to clear it all, we do not. Drivers be really really safe, and if you absolutely must drive, leave EARLY if you have any desire to be on time.

13 itself might be "okay", but everywhere else will not. If the past is any indication, the school likely will not be open. Our "plow" drivers are actually not allowed to drive during the storm. They pre treat then wait for all the snow to stop falling before doing anything else.

This type of storm only comes along about once a decade around here. It's a combination of a strong cold front coming through the area at the same time a coastal storm moves up from the south. Areas closer to the southeast coast in VA will get much higher accumulations then the rest of the state.

I appreciate everyone's comments and answers. I don't have a choice on my travel plans. I will be checking for anymore information you all can provide as this winter storm progresses.

If you have a choice, I would make the trip via the interstates instead of using Route 13 down the outer shore. I think the I-95 / I-64 route stands a much better chance of being clear, and I personally would not want to come over the bay bridge during iffy weather conditions. But that is just me. Others may think differently.

You may want to double check to be sure the dorms are going to be open if school is postponing the start of the semester. I would guess they will be, but that would really suck if not.

The residence halls are open (they opened early for students who wanted to beat the storm).

RE: OT: Weekend Snow
I remember coming back from winter break one year I had to haul to beat a storm that I never would have made it though had I not left when I did from Richmond. This was back in 1996 I think. I remember it taking about an hour and a half from NN to campus because the roads were so bad and it was coming down pretty hard. It snowed all night if I recall and school didn't open until Tuesday.

Norfolk does not clean roads at all. Sunday surface roads in Norfolk will be tragic. I have to be there at 8AM for work Sunday. Coming from Newport News. The worst part of the trip will be Granby Street.

Coming in from Baltimore via Rte50 to 13s to 64W to Military Blvd to Hampton into ODU . Hopefully these roads will be fairly passable by Sunday around noon time when I hope to arrive. Drop them off and turn and head back home.

I sincerely doubt the roads will be OK before Tuesday (except the interstate). There is a layer of ice under the snow layer. It ain't going anywhere anytime soon.

RE: OT: Weekend Snow
Saving grace in this storm is that it was pretty warm until today so there is still a lot of energy in the ground so if it hovers around freezing that sub layer will melt off.

Posted from mobile device. Hopefully it's coherent.

Man, when I was at ODU, everytime my hometown of Fairfax got snow, Norfolk for the same amount but in rain. Now that I'm back in fairfax, we're getting a dusting while Norfolk is getting covered

Except that it will go down to the teens tonight, refreeze to black ice, and won't get above freezing until Tuesday. If they put salt down on any roads they should be OK but I don't know which ones those are.

How many inches of snow would you all say you have so far?
