Georgia Southern has a much larger fan base and their game at Georgia State only drew 23,513, but Kennesaw State, who gets 6,000 at home games, is going to get 40,000 fans to show up in Atlanta?

Georgia Southern and Appalachian State were good adds. Both were rural, had winning cultures, and established football fan bases. Coastal Carolina it going to have a tough time. I don't know how they are going to get attendance up to 15K. It will be tough. The Sun Belt doesn't need to expand, but if they did, it would need to be with another school that can put 20K in the stands.

Marketz isn't driving the Sun Belt.

Someone wants to get the league's attention, they need to be reasonably proximate to the current league.
Either be an obvious addition because they win football games and sell tickets or be an obvious addition because they are going to bring hoops excellence or be an obvious addition because their overall program has shown the capacity to be very successful across multiple sports.

The current leadership (university presidents) don't care if your school is in a city of 1.3 million or 13,000, you have to fit what they are looking for. The people who wanted markets are gone.

Yup.

Then somebody is going to have to explain the addition of Coastal Carolina.

That's easy. Coastal Carolina is an example of "being an obvious addition because their overall program has shown the capacity to be very successful across multiple sports."

National Champions in baseball, a strong men's soccer program, decent basketball. It makes sense.

With the Sun Belt looking to expand, Coastal was just the best of the few reasonable choices.

NOW ... with the Sun Belt not looking to expand, it would take an obvious [whatever] to entice them.

From Wiki.

"As a Division II school, Kennesaw State won five national championships in four sports: Baseball (1996), Men's Basketball (2004), Women's Soccer (2003) and Softball (1995, 1996)."

The athletic department was started in 1983.

Mens hoops four NCAA, 2 NIT, 2 CIT
Baseball (before selected) 2 NCAA regional championships 15 NCAA appearances. Since then a CWS championship, add a sub-regional title, a regional title, and an appearance
Men's soccer (before selected) 14 NCAA tournament appearances round of 16 four times (add another 2 appearances).
Football six FCS playoff appearances for a program that started in 2003.

That's all Division I stuff, not Division II
4.5 hours southeast of App State, 4 hours northeast of Georgia Southern.

Reasonable bus trip (under 8 hours for Olympic sports) for all the eastern Sun Belt schools except South Alabama.

They fit the formula quite well.

RE: Kennesaw State should be in the Sun Belt Conference
Kennesaw State I am seeing signs that they could do better at the FBS better than Georgia State. Georgia State was a bad add for Sun Belt Conference. Both Kennesaw State and Mercer are winning in football. Sun Belt needs to add winning teams.

Jacksonville State
Kennesaw State
North Alabama
Chattanooga
Eastern Kentucky
Sam Houston State
McNeese State
Central Arkansas

SBC and Southland could do a trade.
SBC could get Central Arkansas while Southland gets Little Rock.
SBC could get Sam Houston State while Southland gets UTA back.

SBC West:
Texas State
Sam Houston State
Central Arkansas
Arkansas State
La.-Lafayette
La.-Monroe

SBC East:
Coastal Carolina
South Alabama
Troy
Appalachian State
Georgia State
Georgia Southern

Future candidates:
West:
UTRGV
Missouri State
McNeese State
Central Oklahoma
Lamar
SFA
Wichita State
Midwestern State
West Texas A&M
New Mexico State

East:
Jacksonville State
Jackson State
North Alabama
Chattanooga
Tennessee State
East Tennessee State
Eastern Kentucky
Western Carolina
Liberty
James Madison
Kennesaw State
Mercer
West Florida
Florida Gulf coast
North Florida
Florida A&M

Kennesaw State is in the greater Atlanta Metro area. In the rich northwestern suburbs. 37k students. Natural rivals to Appy State, Georgia State, and Georgia Southern.. Beautiful campus, success in all sports, on campus football stadium. Kennesaw State has huge, huge upside.

KSU is just north of Atlanta which is inside the current Sun Belt footprint which makes the travel arrangements for non Football conference teams easier and cheaper.

KSU vs Ga State games would put 40,000 in the seats every year.

I would expect similar attendance for games against Ga Southern.

The USA, Troy have a lot of alumni in Atlanta metro. Not sure about Coastal Carolina alumni numbers in Atlanta.

KSU has about 37,000 students while Liberty has 15,000 students on campus.

KSU is the better social fit for the SBC.

JSU's problem is that there are already two SBC schools in Alabama and is in a rural location like Liberty.

Atlanta > Lynchburg > Jacksonville, Alabama

But it's not in Atlanta and outside of a very small group of African American's not many people follow them. I get you are trying to butter them up but it's just not a good idea....

If anything Liberty is by far the best choice.

Lol that Tom South Alabama fan is about to get so triggered.
