NIU is 8-1 at the halfway point of the conference season and 15-5 overall. Ball State is 7-2 14-7 overall.
Northern trailed by 11 points in the first quarter but scored 30 points in the fourth quarter on 11 of 15 shooting. The Huskies are third in the country in scoring offense. Central Michigan (14-6, 6-2) lost its second league game, falling at Toledo (13-6, 4-4), 74-72. The win breaks a three-game losing streak for Toledo, which is 13-6 and 4-4. Toledo had 21 offensive rebounds and had 22 second-chance points against Central, which went into the game leading the MAC in rebounding margin (+6.7) in league games. Five Rockets scored in double figures. Tinara Moore had a season-best 33 points for CMU. Presley Hudson, who was leading the MAC in conference games at 27.1 points per game, was held to 9 on 2-of-10 shooting. Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriott, who missed Toledo's loss to Kent State last week with a concussion, returned to action with 13 points.
Buffalo (15-5, 5-4) won a big cross-division at Western Michigan (14-6, 5-4), 62-47. The Bulls held Western to 30 points over the last three quarters and limited WMU to 26 percent shooting. JoAnna Smith had 27 points for Buffalo.
Ohio (16-4, 7-2) kept its two-game lead in the East with a 79-62 win at Miami (7-14, 1-7). Quiera Lampkins had 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Kent State (11-10, 5-4) stayed even with Buffalo in the conference with a last-second 80-78 win over Bowling Green (5-16, 1-8) in Kent. KSU's Larissa Lurken (31 points) and BG's Carly Santoro (32 points) dueled throughout the game, often guarding each other. Lurken took a charge from Santoro with 27 seconds to go and the score tied. Then back-up point guard Megan Carter hit a 12-foot jumper with 2 seconds to go the win the game. Lurken made 19 of 20 free throws. She leads the nation in free throws attempted and made. Akron (9-10, 2-7) beat Eastern Michigan (6-15, 1-7) in Akron. Hannah Plybon had 26 and Alex Ricketts 22 for the Zips.
