If this team wants to avoid playing on Friday in Charleston, they better go 2-0 on this homestand against Elon & Drexel. You can't lose at home to the weak sisters of the CAA. Hopefully the locals come out for these next two games, since I assume the students are not back yet from winter break. Thoughts?

Thought #1: Beating Drexel in Williamsburg has been a problem recently for our 20 win teams.

Thought #2: So far, the Tribe is erratic.

Thought #3: Losing at home to anyone decreases the chances for a high seed.

Last thought: Waiting to see what happens. That's why they play the games.

Elon is well coached, but they are relatively slow afoot, especially their big men. We can't let them dictate a half court pace, and have to defend the three. This one is on David and Ollie to push, push, push with Omar, Daniel, Greg, Paul and Justin flying to the rim, for all 40 mins, and trailers crashing the boards on the breaks because their bigs will not get there.

Key to Drexel, is pressuring them the length of the court and forcing TO's. Young, inexperienced backcourt. Tony talked preseason about possibly applying more full court pressure, but we have not seen it. This is a good time to do it, and make it difficult to get into a post game with Williams.

Think/hope this may be two games back to back at home where these guys finally play up to their potential. No academic load, in your own abode, and fresh off a morale/confidence boosting road win.

Need to defend the 3 against Elon and limit Rodney Williams against Drexel

Sort of weird, really, but, if you run through the CAA Team Stats and find W&M, you will find Elon one below or one above in just about every stat category. The only real difference is that we score more points per game and we are a better rebounding team. Sort of screams close game.

They are a bit slow and Eddy may miss the game (they would certainly miss his assists and 9-10 points a game). They always seem to play us close. Need to get a good start and put a little distance between us early.


Latest update: Eddy expected to give it a go, but may not be at 100%.

I'm no expert on Elon, but they looked much more respectable against Duke than we did. Also only lost to Georgetown by 3.

If our team goes into this with the same attitude on Elon that you read on some of these posts, we will get blown out.

Right now we are a 5.5 favorite.

I remember Santa Ana and Seibring from last season. We completely held them in check both games (I think Santa Ana only played in one of them). Seibring is tied for the leading scorer along with Dawkins (also listed as a forward) so I expect Jack and Nate to shut them down again. Need to make sure Santa Ana doesn't get hot from outside, I've watched him try (and fail) to shoot his way out of a slump, he'll keep throwing them up until they go in (he's taken 105 3 pointers, but only made 30).

Also their backup center is huge and from Lithuania so I assume when they play Hofstra he and Gustys can bond over cold Baltic winters and which root vegetables are best used in stews.

I'd say W&M and Elon are both squarely middle of the pack CAA at this point. Five point favorites at home sounds about right. They looked very impressive the first half against Duke. Very good shooting team.

I'm not sure what to think of them. When I look at their wins and losses some look good (like Duke) and others look bad (like Radford). It also appears that nobody is really consistent game to game.

They also jack up about 30 threes per game. From what I can tell they live and die by the three pointer.

Run all game and make them go up tempo.

Teams normally suffer a letdown the first game back from a long road game. This will be a tough one.

Inconsistency is usually the case when you rely on 3s to win.

I don't think Elon has much speed so hopefully they won't drive to the hoop with ease. If they do and kick out to open shooters, we better hope W&M scores at least 80

Looks like there could be something like 6 inches of snow Saturday. Drexel can certainly get in and out OK, but getting the fan base out Saturday might be a trick. Anyone know anything about the decision making process on whether to postpone?

I thought the same thing. However, by all accounts Elon is not a running team. We have looked to push tempo this year. I say push tempo, hurt them in transition, and let the hottest shooting team win.
