Where did Chris Beard coach before TTU? It looks like the bulk of the stats are from Coach Smith's recruits.

Tech losses its top 2 scorers and adds a Graduate transfer from Arky State and seems to be playing well. Now take their record with a grain of salt OOC SOS is 303 so they have pretty much been playing cupcakes all year long.

Not sure how to take this...Could be Tubby had his players prepared and ready or the new coach improved on Tubby.

Will be interesting to see how they finish.

And most of our scoring comes from CJP recruits. Can't have it both ways.

He was at Arkansas-Little Rock last year. They went 30-5 and advanced to 2nd Rnd of NCAA Tournament after beating Purdue. Seems like a good coach.

Tubby left it in better shape than he found it. Sign of a good coach.

Same for Minnesota and Kentucky?

He did leave some solid payers behind at TT, BUT....Beard (who obviously took the TT job after Tubby) managed to bring in three players (including TT's 2nd leading scorer), who combine to average 27 pts and 10 rebounds and account for over 40% of all three points made.

Again, these are guys brought in to TT in May.

I thought Tubby brought in 3 players and potentially a 4th one if he ever qualifies.

Beard's recruiting results at TTU look similar to what Tubby did here. He brought a kid he was recruiting to UALR. He stole a grad transfer from UALR - who played for him last year. He grabbed another transfer and another hs'er.

You're over-playing your hand if you are lauding Beard's recruiting - with all the shots you've taken at Tubby's.

Heck. Maybe he'll win a NC at TTU. He does seem a good coach. That way you guys who minimize Tubby's NC at UK - saying it was really Pitino's - will give Tubby credit for this one.

Yep. It's really sad to see Markel's production slip since CJP left, and makes one wonder how much better DL's production would be if CJP was still coaching here. We probably wouldn't have the depleted roster we have if CJP were still here. What's really sad is, we'd probably be undefeated and ranked if CJP were still here and not subjected to the poor coaching our players are getting from that wanna be coach, Tubby Smith. Really sad times for Tiger basketball, please bring back the glory years of our former wonder boy coach.

Are they averaging a combined 27 and 10?

Beard's best big man recruit is the second leading scorer.

Tubby's is injured...again, which while unfortunate was highly predictable (and was predicted most of the summer when some of the org posters were stressing the need for another big man option aside from Chad given his injury history)...and the other big man recruit hasn't even been cleared by the NCAA yet on January 4.

No one cares if you bring in an entire roster if they don't perform - what do you squeeze out of those players results-wise is the only thing that matters.

It would be highly difficult for sane person to argue against the fact that Beard either recruited a higher value recruit to Lubbock OR he's getting more out of the same level recruits.

One or the other.

That's kind of a simplification of recruiting.

Beard brought in a grad, Tubby brought in a grad, therefore both did the same work.

The only problem with that logic is that Beard (who was hired after Tubby) went out and got one of the best big men/grad transfers on the market in Anthony Livingston (Tech's second leading scorer) and Tubby got Chad Rykhoek, who while giving noble effort, wasn't highly thought of and hadn't played one game at the DI level.

RE: STR-TTU doing well so far this year
Instead of Tubby vs. Beard, I'll say that Tech's success this year is a positive sign on both coaches.

Tubby built the foundation - guys like Aaron Ross are solid DI players - and Beard supplemented with a good late recruiting effort to fill holes/needs.

It's highly doubtful if Tubby had stayed at Tech they would have landed a high level grad transfer like Livingston though.

However, he did recruit and develop a lot of the key pieces that surround Livingston.

Beard coached at Arkansas-Little Rock.

Livingston came from Arkansas State.

In Penny Lane there is a barber showing photographs
Of every head he's had the pleasure to have known
And all the people that come and go
Stop and say hello

On the corner is a banker with a motorcar
The little children laugh at him behind his back
And the banker never wears a mac
In the pouring rain, very strange

Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes
There beneath the blue suburban skies
I sit, and meanwhile back

In Penny Lane there is a fireman with an hourglass
And in his pocket is a portrait of the queen
He likes to keep his fire engine clean
It's a clean machine

Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes
A four of fish and finger pies
In summer, meanwhile back

Behind the shelter in the middle of a roundabout
The pretty nurse is selling poppies from a tray
And though she feels as if she's in a play
She is anyway

In Penny Lane the barber shaves another customer
We see the banker sitting waiting for a trim
And then the fireman rushes in
From the pouring rain, very strange

Penny lane is in my ears and in my eyes
There beneath the blue suburban skies
I sit, and meanwhile back
Penny lane is in my ears and in my eyes
There beneath the blue suburban skies
Penny Lane

Beard knew the issues at UNLV before he got there. (They only had 3 players returning after the season and a questionable AD, who is, now, rumored to be on her way out)

Beard is from Texas and was hired as an assistant at Tx Tech by Bobby Knight. He coached there for about 10 years and wound up as the associate head coach. So when Tubby left the job, Beard was a logical choice. He actually wanted to be in Lubbock. Coaches who want to be in Lubbock is a short list.

He sat next to Bobby Knight and has been successful at every level. It's a great hire.

He got the grad transfer from Arkansas STATE (May 19th) silly. A 6'7 guy 90 minutes from Memphis (and originally from Maryland) so there was no reason why BAM! shouldn't have been hot on the kid the minute he declared he was leaving stAte.

Geez, Lubbock or Memphis. Play for an HOF coach or a guy one year removed from Angelo State. All sorts of minutes available. NBA city.

I also cannot find ANY credible evidence that either Shadell Millinghaus (Signed May 4th) or Niem Stevenson (signed April 26th) had ever been on an offer list from Beard at UALR.

In fact, Rutgers had been all over Stevenson and his list (as of Feb 22nd) was Oregon, Rutgers, Cincinnati and Texas A&M, and that Kansas, Purdue, Texas and Minnesota have called recently.

Bottom line appears that Beard got rolling and grabbed three productive guys who he had no previous relationship with and got them to Lubbock.
