Well it comes from the French word Boucan..... to smoke meat. A Boucaner was someone who smoked/cured meat.
same root as barbecue.. Hey we love our BBQ in East Tennessee..
Go Meat Smokers!!!

Lol, that seems more realistic than Ponce De Leon sailing up the Tennessee River.

Not the Tennessee river. Cmon man there is a huge underground river below ETSU campus and pirates would sail all the way up from the coast in an underground river cavern and bury their treasure here. Know the back story u pleb

I guess our mascot could be a slab of ribs oozing BBQ sauce as they cheer on our fans at midcourt.

Not the ribs themselves, but maybe the BBQ chef with sharp knives and a smoking fire.

Those old meat smokers found that there was more money in raiding Spanish galleons than smoking meat over a frame.

Or some of the wait staff that used to work at Ridgewood BBQ. Those ladies intimated me and most like would our opponents too. 03-drunk

"ETSU Buc-Qneers"

(Altho that's obviously too easy to alter to something altogether different.)

I don't think I ever knew that Jerry Robertson was who drew that version of the Pirate. (from the buckybio page)

I think Tom Seaton would have something to say about that.

I'd be happy with either. Or both.

Finally..............the true(?) story:

How Scottish orphans became the Buccaneers

A cursory search doesn't show the book was ever released, but I emphasize "cursory".

What recent teams have abandoned their nickname for an all together new one. I mean as a complete makeover. What would you replace Buccaneer with if it was up to you?

I've always wanted to be the Frontiersmen.

I don't know why we let WVU, App, and UT take all our historical relevance. It's our history as well, in the case of UT they stole Crockett from us for their Volunteer. It would be an easy transition for the Boone/Crockett kids in Wash Co too.

Of course the ideal rebranding would be to turn us into the State of Franklin University Frontiersmen. I'll keep dreaming.

I can see the t-shirts now: "SFU - so say the Frontiersmen"!
