And that's with almost $11 million in student fees!

These deficits are something that never gets accounted for when people compare budgets. By state law, we have to balance our books. We have a +/- $20 million budget, but that's what gets spent, and that's what comes in (albeit some at the last minute to cover the gap). We're actually in better shape than schools with $30/40 million budgets but $10-20 million of it being in red ink.

Harbor, thanks for pointing this out. Many people talk about 'budget' which isn't equal weighting

The schools are spending it under the assumption that "if you spend it they will come". Not necessarily sure that will happen but they are spending it. It will be replaced by the state or new fees. One way or another they will get it back. Meanwhile we are falling further and further or behind.

There may be a place for him on staff at Southern Miss. AD is not the place.

It's a shell game that can only be played for so long. Higher Ed costs are becoming a major political issue, and tens of millions of dollars in student fees and state funds being poured into athletic programs that relatively few people give a damn about won't fly forever. That's especially true given the fact that the high-resource schools tend to be the ones controlling the statehouses. Virginia has already passed a law that by year "x," only "y" percent of an FBS athletic budget can be raised via student fees. ODU is having to make changes to accommodate, and it's putting a fork in others' thoughts of moving up.

What's our strategy? If we don't spend it, they'll come anyway? Don't spend it unless they come?

Not quite. Gotta click the links for the true story rather than the writers twist. The 20 million loss does NOT include the 10+ million in student fees nor the 9+ million in university provided funds. They spent 30+ million with 10 coming from tickets/donations and the remaining 20 from students and university funds.

To our credit, we did eventually run that guy out of town with pitchforks. Our shame is that this was done at exactly the wrong time.

I did read the link. That's where I got the figure. You're right, though. The whole thing is deceptive since if you do the math, there is no real deficit, just additional sources of income covering what the department didn't generate on its own. You could maybe argue a $9 million deficit if the university coughed up its part after the fact, but if that was planned for, then no.

That said, again, those income sources are not going to be sustainable. The day when folks stop and say, "We're not paying for this s*** anymore" is coming sooner rather than later.
