RE: Nation Is Finding Out ACC Refs are Horrible
The nation is finding out that all conference refs are horrible. Maybe that's a function of having all bowl game officials come from a conference other than the two participants. There did seem to be more questionable calls across the board this bowl season.

I wonder how much of this is attributable to replay. Are officials resorting to using a "default" call on close plays with the expectation that replay officials will sort it out? That seems (to me) to be the case with targeting calls. Does it spill over to other calls as well?

The only credit I can give ACC officiating is that they've moved away from actively and obviously trying to undermine football favorites/powers. That's something I guess.

But they still make too many inexplicable calls, and they're over involved in the game. They seem to want to make the "big call", the "gotcha" penalty like they're the third team on the field.

I agree that for the most part all conferences have lousy refereeing. But there's something about the ACC that the officials seem not just incompetent sometimes, but they're oddly proactive. It's like they never want us to forget they're out there also. I don't watch enough non-FSU ACC basketball to be authoritative, but it seems like that's always been the basketball M.O. as well.

Too much refs think that the audience is watching to see them.

The ACC bb is shaky too. But fb way below the line. The expanded instant replay use didn't help.
