RE: FIRE JOEY JONES#
Its time, guys. Even if we win out, we will, at best, be 7-5. And we aren't winning out. CJJ won't be fired. But his contract should not be renewed at year end. CJJ did do a lot to get our program up and running. Thank you. But he's not getting the job done. Its time to make a change. For me, there's no anger, just a realization that its time for a change.

Here's our FBS record and conference record the last couple of years.

So far this year, we're 2-5 vs FBS and 2-2 in conference
2016, 4-7 vs FBS, and 2-6 in conference
2015, 4-7 vs FBS, and 3-5 in conference
2014, 6-7 vs FBS and 5-3 in conference
2013, 6-5 vs FBS and 4-3 in conference (plus 1 FCS loss)
2012, 1-11 vs FBS and 1-7 in conference

So since we've moved up, we're 23-42 vs FBS, and 19-31 in conference play. It would be different if we were really improving, but we're not. Its more than one game. Its more than one season.

When the taxpayers/students are paying 500,000 a year or more, there's an expectation of results and accountability. I'm pretty much ready for a change. I'm good with giving CJJ a plaque when we finally get our OCS.

Tom, thanks for quantifying what I'm getting at. If we (the alumni and fans) of South want better production for the money being spent, a change has to be made. However if we REALLY are satisfied with sub par performance, a change should also be made. If we are really content with losing, and Jones is doing that for 500k+a year, let's go cheaper for the same results. I know in Mobile that a coach making literally HALF of Jones would enjoy a comfortable life all while saving the university money. And since records don't matter....

RE: FIRE JOEY JONES#
I don't see a scenario where Joey Jones returns next season. There is no way for Dr. Erdman to reasonably justify giving a contract extension to someone who can't compete in the worst conference in college football. Either he will be relieved of his duties following our loss to NMSU, or he will announce his resignation. Even if he wins out, it will likely not be enough to satisfy fans who have been extremely patient for a long time (like myself). I've defended Joey for a long time now telling fellow fans and even many people on this site to give him a chance to build depth. Well...he has depth this year, and I see no obvious difference in this year and last year, other than we had 2 good wins last year to none this year.

Don't get me wrong, I love Joey Jones. There is not a classier coach with better intentions than Joey in college football. He loves this program, the University, the city he is from and played high school football, and most importantly the players. There is no one else I would like to see lead this team to success and victory than him, but his time has come and gone. He's done some great things for our program when no one else was interested in a team that didn't even have offices, locker rooms, assistant coaches, a stadium, a practice field, or even players. His overall vision for the program is so close to being achieved that it makes me sick to even write this post, and if the next coach has great success, it's primarily because of the groundwork Joey has put in place. I will always have tremendous respect for him, as a man and a coach, for what he has done for USA.

All that game did is make sure you kept your coach for another year.

I agree 100% with this post. There will be a building, offices, fields, something named for him once everything is built. Joey is South Alabama football, unfortunately, we just aren't seeing improvements from one year to the next.

Win-Win for Troy. We keep Neal Brown, and you guys keep Joey Jones.

John Wooden won his first championship in his 16th season at UCLA. He won 9 of the next 10 championships after that first one. Different sport. Different era. Still wonder "what if" sometimes when coaches who are not making terrible decisions over and over are let go.

Except Joey can't hold up his end of the bargain and win 4 more games. 7 wins would have kept his job, we aren't getting there. If we do get there, it still may not matter at this point.

At this point I think it basically should be single elimination - one more loss and he's done, even if it isn't announced until the end of the season.

I expect an announcement about his planned retirement soon. It appears as though he’s finally lost the players.

It’s been ugly for a while. Joey will, as he should, finish the season and become vested in the retirement system then ride off into the sunset.

Joey has been successful enough, that if he wanted it, he could get a gig at a lower level school.

I wish all the luck in the world for whatever he does next. I am also very thankful for the job he did to start our program.

04-cheers Here's to you Joey Jones!!!04-cheers

The good news is that there's actually a decent group of returning players for the new coach.
