Mackey Award Winner Jake Butt rails against College Football Hypocrisy
From the article...talks about Bowl and Coaches leaving:
MIAMI BEACH, FL -- So much attention has been given to Christian McCaffrey and Leonard Fournette's decisions to forgo their final game with their respective teams in their bowl games, in favor of preparing for the NFL Draft. Many pundits have declared them selfish, and even other players have spoken out and said that they would never choose self over their team, including a few Wolverines.
While that remains a topic du jour, with bowl season in full swing, Michigan tight end and senior captain Jake Butt raises another question, while admitting he can't judge or fault those players for making a business decision.
“Yeah, why aren't we talking about coaches leaving their bowl games early and leaving all their players behind?" Butt asked. "Coaches can leave. Players can't leave; players can't transfer just because their coaches leave. Coaches can come and go as they please, when more money is placed on the table, the coach will most likely chase after that. Here we are living off rent checks. Guy sees an opportunity for a lifelong dream for the NFL and make a business decision, I can't judge anybody. I don't know what all went into that decision, and I'm not going pretend to know. I'm not going to judge or act on that. I support those guys. Best of luck to them.”

I am almost always anti-player in the sports realm but he is definitely right here.

I am usually pro-player and "anti-school pulling in millions of revenues but mandate the fiction of student-athletes so as not to pay them" (similar to me being pro-union generally) and I also think he is right here.

I would call it a selfish move by the player if coaches weren't allowed to jump ship anytime they feel like it, even right before a big bowl game. As it is, I can't argue with players sitting out. If you want loyalty, it has to be on both sides.

Is Jake taking a bit of a shot at his own coach there?

We do talk about it. We talk about it on discussion boards. Radio shows talk about it. TV shows talk about it. Players leaving is more rare so it is getting more attention.
Being selfish isn't always a bad thing. In the 2 cases mentioned, I think that is justified.
I've always thought the player should be allowed to transfer without restriction if the HC, OC, or DC leaves. Possibly if the position coach leaves.

Coaches have been demeaning the value of bowls for years. How many coachless teams with make shift staffs played in bowl games this year?
I'd be in favor of a coaching "dead period" from August to Jan 12 where college head coaches cannot be contacted by other NCAA institutions. Move the recruiting calendar around a bit to allow coaching changes to be made after that date while still giving the newly hired guys a chance to hold thier current recruiting classs together.

And now Jake Butt Tears his ACL in the Orange Bowl...again Exhibition Game....
Michigan tight end Jake Butt tore his ACL during Friday night's Orange Bowl and will need to undergo surgery, a source close to the school told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Butt injured his right knee at the end of a 16-yard reception in the second quarter of Florida State's 33-32 victory.
Butt, a senior, won the Mackey Award as the nation's best tight end this season and was considered one of the top NFL prospects at the position heading into Friday's game. ESPN NFL draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. ranks Butt as the third-best draft-eligible tight end for the 2017 class.
