Dan D'Antoni Post Game Press Conference -- Pitt 12-28-16

I could set and listen to Dan talk about just basketball in general all day. But you should watch at least the 1st part of this press conference. He breaks a simple yes or no question down into analytics of the game.

I had seen the analytics sample on twitter yesterday and laughed my assoff.

Just watched all 11 minutes of this. Great postgame interview. He's going to be dangerous if he gets the talent in there that I'm sure he pictures in his head.

Could be fun days ahead for Marshall hoops. Very refreshing interview. Thanks for posting it.

The twitter version was funny as can be but hearing and watching Dan tear the beat reporters question down into points per shot was epic.

The recruiting and getting transfers has started since Dan stepped on campus. Jon Elmore (VMI), Stevie Browning (Fairmont State, should have been in GW all 4 years), Terrence Thompson (Juco, Charlotte Commit), Phil Bledsoe, Ky're Allison, CJ Burks are all good shooters. Add in players like Austin Loop and Ryan Taylor from the Herrion era who bought into what Dan is trying to do then you have a pretty good core.

The height is coming with Tanner Robinette (6'8), Iran Bennett (6'10), Jannson Williams (who is RSing right now at 6'7), Darius George (2018 6'6). And then add in Jerrod West (2017 5'11 PG) and Jeremy Dillon (2018 SG, Dillon was the WV Kennedy Award Winner, WV State Football Player Of The Year, and his best sport is basketball).

In the next few years, its going to start getting real fun in Huntington I think. And the thing is, Dan is doing it with the majority of the team coming from WV and regional talent.

Meanwhile in Huntington it took the Herd 8 minutes to score their first points against ODU. 14-4 now but the Herd more than capable of erasing our lead in a hurry.

ODU's defense is just incredible so far, nearly zero open looks so far for MU, Loop's hit a few loooong contested 3's and now a 4 pt. play to get the Herd back to w/in 5.

Monarch's are probably going to get this one, offense shooting well and stifling defense. MU could never get any rhythm going offensively and ODU's forced about a zillion turnovers, ODU up 9 w/ 7 mins. left.

Going to OT. D'Antoni smart to drive it at the Monarchs this half and I'm watching this on my phone so I'm not in a great position to talk but **** they called a lot of fouls on us. It kept MU in the game and will hurt us in OT

Good game, Marshall. Too many whistles on both squads for my liking, but an entertaining and hard-fought game. Hope we can return the favor down the road in Norfolk.

Refs sucked both ways. They were really inconsistent all night long.

One trip down the floor a guy could get mugged and knocked to the floor with nothing called. Looked like old Big East basketball or prison yard basketball.

Next trip down the floor they would call a little tiny touch foul or moving screen.

Hard for players to get into a rhythm like that.

I will say that unfortunately, we have the exact same problem we had a year ago that makes Marshall have to play not to foul. It stinks. One more interior guy and I think you'd see a completely different style defensively, too. One that would be aggressive.

I wouldn't call it disinterest as much as just a size/depth problem with the 4/5 spots. It's been a work in progress that is still the one thing sort of holding back the program. It's not for lack of effort so it's tough to be upset at anyone about it. Just haven't hit across the board just yet. Haven't stopped trying, though.

Help inside is coming. I like the approach that Dan is taking in building this team. He has built it for the long haul and not come in got rid of 75% of the roster and rebuilt in a year. That's what coaches do when they are looking to move up. Get some decent and flashy recruits, win a few games to get noticed somewhere else. Dan isn't looking for the next job. This is most likely his last job.

With Tanner Robinette (6'9) and Iran Bennett (6'10) the inside is getting more help. Also at 6'7 I think Jannson Williams and 6'6 Darius George could play some 4 if need be, even though George has played SG though out HS.

He's not the be-all, end-all fix we need on the inside, but I've been really impressed with Penava so far this year. He had a big late-game block against ODU last night, too.

The block Penava had and then that Burks had gave the Herd the chances to win the game. Penava only had 4 points but he had the game winner on the CJ Burks curl where he got 3 ODU defenders to chase him. Once he passed the ball off to Penava there wasn't an ODU player within 7-8 feet of Ajdin.

Dan's title at Marshall is head coach. But in reality it should be Head Teacher. Ive not seen anyone set his team up and instead of telling them to run the set play, he will teach the play step by step before he runs it. Both D'Antoni and Matt Daniel's (women's head coach) are very similar in their coaching styles and they are both working.

I can remember in 2014 everyone was roasting Marshall for hiring a 66 year old who only had one year of college coaching (Dan was the HC of the Marshall 1970 freshman team, which included Mike) and HS HC. I think his highest grade on the hire was a D, most were a D- or F. I'm still waiting for apologies from all of those so called experts who graded his hire. I know you will never see one. But it just shows what most of them actually know.

Actually, I recall one of them apologizing last year when we made our conference run. Let me see if I can find it.
