Should be there for the long haul, since he was fired from his dream job.

I remember a school that brought back a coaching legend for a second stint. It was known as the Johnny Majors II era. Almost destroyed the FB program.

Good examples where re-hiring a coach works out
Bobby Petrino at Louisville
Bill Synder at KSU
Mike Riley at OrSt

Bad example where it did not work out:
John Robinson at USC

I am having trouble thinking of other examples

Mark Whipple at UMass.

And back in the old days, Clark Shaughnessy performed two stints at Maryland, with the second being a failure.

Dennis Erickson's second stint at Idaho saw nothing of note, other than him leaving after one year.

Chris Ault actually was HC at Nevada on three separate occasions and it appeared to worked for them.

Yes, Johny Majors is a great example of a time where bringing back the coach did not work out.

Dennis Erickson is another interesting example, because the guy just could never learn his lesson and be happy at one place. Always had to move on to a bigger challenge. You would have thought he would been ready to settle down by the second time he was at Idaho, but he bailed pretty fast.

Yeah, one of my best friends is an Idaho alumnus. They were all excited about him coming back...thought he'd be like Bill Snyder and build the program up, maybe help raise money to replace the Kibbie Dome, get the program competitive with Boise, etc. Then he bailed after a year. Weak sauce.

Different sports, but the Lakers and Phil Jackson and the Yankees and Billy Martin separated and got back on five different occasions. There was also Joe Gibbs and the Redskins.

How did Mike Riley land an NFL head job after going 3-8/5-6 in college (with zero nfl assistant experience to boot)?

Dennis Franchione at Texas St, is another recent example where the jury is still out.

Ault at Nevada is another recent example that worked out well. He kept retiring and then unretiring, coaching Nevada during 3 different periods between 1976 and 2012.

Kind of like George Halas in the NFL with the Bears. Coached the Bears 40 years total, split into 4 different 10 year periods. I guess the guy just got tired after 10 years.

The dude got UConn to the Fiesta Bowl, that's borderline miracle work right there. He should do fine.

RE: Randy Edsall will return as head coach of the UConn Huskies
I don't find the Bill Snyder and Bobby Petrino comparisons comparable. Snyder at KSU was a top-10 program nationally and a top program in the Big 8/12. Petrino led the Cardinals into a top-10 program, culminating in an Orange Bowl victory.

Edsall never won a BCS game, nor did his teams ever finish in the top-10. Heck, I believe I saw somewhere on Twitter today that he has never won a game against a top-25 team while at UConn.

Bottom line, UConn hired Edsall because they needed to get rid of Diaco at all costs. They weren't going to get a hot coordinator or young up-and-coming coach because of how late in the game the search was, and because the perception of the UConn football position is not high. Edsall was the safe and available choice.

Safe is fine after the six year sh!t show we've watched.

He has no built in advantage to get to that level bowl this time around.

And he only got it that time due to the Big East rules where the 3 way tie for the league crown went to the school who hadn't represented the league in the BCS bowl most recently. West Virginia had done so in 2007, and Pitt had done so in 2004.

Hopefully, for UConn this hire is a stop gap measure, to stop the bleeding. That school deserves something better.
