It's a reasonable hire. He knows the territory and had success there. They should at least be better than what they've been. If he can even get them up to middling they could always then upgrade from there.

I still want UConn in the ACC....

Good luck with that. IIRC, Edsall badmouthed the ACC as Maryland transitioned to the Big Ten.

UCONN is not going anywhere.
The best hope is a strengthened AAC.

He has no built in advantage to get to that level bowl this time around.

And he only got it that time due to the Big East rules where the 3 way tie for the league crown went to the school who hadn't represented the league in the BCS bowl most recently. West Virginia had done so in 2007, and Pitt had done so in 2004.

Hopefully, for UConn this hire is a stop gap measure, to stop the bleeding. That school deserves something better.

That is not even remotely close to what the tie breaker was.

UConn, Pitt and WVU all went 5-2 in conference play, but UConn went 2-0 vs. Pitt and WVU. Pitt went 1-1 vs. UConn & WVU and WVU went 1-1 vs. UConn and Pitt.

It is indeed a reasonable, if uninspired, hire for UConn.

That is not possible.. if someone was 2-0, and one was 1-1 than the third team had to be 0-2

Indeed, Pitt was 0-2 and could only go if UConn and WVU lost in the final week. But the point is that UConn didn't win the tie breaker on some made up "last team to get to a BCS bowl" basis, they earned it by beating both the other two.

Yes Terry, that's my view at this point. I was disappointed. But he's coming here cheap, and on a short deal. He will absolutely improve the level of play, just by not being crazy. He did show that he could identify under the radar players and coach them up, putting many in the NFL. More than about half the P5 schools did during that period.

Is he the guy to take UConn to a level beyond what they were in the Big East? No. But I think we need to get back to where we were when he left before we can hire that guy. He may well be the right guy to do that. There are some players on this team. They should have beaten Navy and other games, before they imploded under Wacky Bob.

Edsall just did a great job at UConn press conference. Was genuine, sincere and appears eager to get the program in the right direction.

Take a look at where Oregon State football was before Riley was hired. Like Northwestern in the 1970s, or Kansas State before Snyder.

Even Bob Diaco won praise for his initial press conference.

Charlie Weis did at ND in 2005 as well.

Coaches always seem to win that one. Lets see how he does the next few years.

I think that he will be a big improvement over Diaco, but time will tell how much.

Edsall totally missed a shot to hit a grand slam at his introductory press conference, as he should have went full-on Madusa/Alundra Blayze and dropped the Civil ConFLiCT Trophy in the trash can. That would have been epic.

As long as Edsall doesn't create a War for the Victory Shield with Tulsa, I'd say that he's already an improvement over Diaco.

Edsall rubbed many MD fans the wrong way from day one. I will give him credit, though, for cleaning up the football program in terms of academics and off-field discipline.
