Congrats Minnesota!! Holiday Bowl champions
Well deserved win for coach Claeys and his staff, along with the (remaining) players.

They bamboozled Wazzou's offense with a 2-5-4 and even a 1-5-5 defensive alignment at times, relying on the strength of the linebacking group.

Offense did enough to get the win, granted the two touchdowns came off: a tipped would-be interception near the endzone, and an interception by the Gophers that was run back but then called as stepped out of bounds.

Lot of crap has gone down the last few weeks.

I'm still hopeful that: a) no expulsions or suspensions will be given to any players, and b) that no players transfer out, particularly Winfield's boy.

Probably wishful thinking, but we will see.

Congrats on a 9-4 season!! You've made coach Kill very proud, and continued the great work that he started. 04-cheers

It was a nice win for the Gophers, and the B1G.

Actually, I thought they both played well enough to lose. Minnesota just didn't feel as charitable as Wazzou and more importantly ran the ball fairly well. I felt that the size and discipline of Minnesota's offensive line was the ultimate difference maker. On that I will congratulate them.

IIRC, Wazzoo was a pretty big favorite. They finished tied for 3rd in the PAC, Minnesota was tied for 8th in the B1G.

The Holiday Bowl is a pretty prominent bowl, it's pretty much the biggest PAC bowl outside of the NY6. For a lowly B1G team to travel out west and take it is a nice feather in the B1G cap.

Don't like admitting it but that's the way I see it. 07-coffee3

Quo, before this is over with I think everyone is going to realize just how woeful the PAC was this year. The early season blowouts and upsets were not an accident.

But, the game I saw today that was an impressive win for the Big 10 was the Northwestern game. They beat a solid Pitt squad and while injuries hampered Pitt at no time was their offensive line in control. So, my jury is out on the Big 10.

RE: Congrats Minnesota!! Holiday Bowl champions
People probably think Minn's OL is a lot like Wisconsin's: big, huge, nasty white guys from the upper midwest that ate a lot of potatoes growing up.

Only the starting RT is from Minn, though he is 6-9. The rest of the starting OL this were mainly: three transfers from Kansas JUCO's, and two Texas high school players.

AND, for the Holiday Bowl the starting center was a surprise injury, out for the game. And the backup was already hurt. So the backup backup, who happens to the be the starting QB's little brother, got to play the whole game, the last of their (the brothers') career. Kinda special.

I watched him a bit ... it was clear that he was manhandled at times by the big, powerful Islanders on the Wazzou DL. But got the job done. Kudos to him.

RE: Congrats Minnesota!! Holiday Bowl champions
Cool little feature in the StarTrib today about the third string center who got to start the bowl game. Never got to start a game at Minn, was undersized and a walkon. Brother of the starting QB.

Was calling it quits after this year, even though he had a year of eligibility remaining.

Well, in fact he had basically already started hanging it up by the end of this season and started losing weight to help speed up recovery from foot surgery.

Then he suddenly gets told he's the starting center two days before the game. Pretty amazing.

How would you like to be a 6-1/6-2, guessing down to 275lbs, guy going up against these giant Islanders on Wazzou's DL, tribal tattoos and the whole thing. Those guys looked like they were 6-5, 300+ with 10% bf. Crazy.

He got pushed around, but did enough to help the team win. Cool story

Holiday Bowl is a huge game. I've asked for to be added to the NY6 rotation and it was a runner up to the Peach Bowl for the final slot.

Huge for Minnesota, just huge.
