RE: Defensive Cooordinator
Bailiff was part of a panel yesterday at the AFCA Convention (along with Todd Berry (AFCA exec director and former UL-Monroe coach) and David Cutcliffe (Duke coach)) entitled "In Transition". No idea what it was about. Apparently Bailiff took Gus Malzahn's spot, since Malzahn was in Tampa commentating for ESPN on national championship game.

From Chris Fore's twitter feed from #AFCAConvention:

Chris Fore ‏@CoachFore 20h20 hours ago
David Bailiff - "I became a college coach and thought I was gonna see the world, I've only seen a bunch of counties in Texas."

(New Mexico being a large county in far-West Texas, of course.)

Chris Fore ‏@CoachFore 20h20 hours ago
Bailiff: Every morning I get up, get in a 3 pt stance, my wife says "hut, hut," and I'm off! Elicits big laugh! #AFCAConvention

Chris Fore ‏@CoachFore 20h20 hours ago
Jim Bailiff: I don't watch the sports news. They are either telling you how great you are, or how bad you are. I just want to be me."

John G. Bronkhorst @coachbronk
@CoachFore It's David Bailiff. I was just giving you a hard time

Chris Fore ‏@CoachFore 20h20 hours ago
Dang!! Thanks for the correction Coach!!

My thoughts are that we will promote from within. I would think that Patterson would be the guy.
In a sink or swim year, I would be surprised if Bailiff elects to radically change the scheme by bringing in someone who coaches a different scheme. With that said, I would love to bring DeRuyter here.

DeRuyter still is owed $3.1 million by Fresno under a five-year contract signed after the 2013 season with two conference championships in two seasons on the resume...led he still wants to coach money might not be an object.

OKay, that would be awesome and worth changing the scheme. And given his Air Force ties, you would have a coach in waiting if Bailiff is let go in 2017.

Why was DeRuyter let go if he is so great?

His Bulldogs started 1-7 this year, following a 3-9 record in 2015 after playing in the 2014 Mountain West Conference championship game.

One factor in his teams' poor performance was the difficulty DeRuyter had in getting his recruits to matriculate or stay in school: In his "first four recruiting classes, of the 75 players to sign national letters of intent on the first Wednesday in February, 33 either didn’t make it into the program or left the program."

RE: Defensive Cooordinator
It isn't heartening that the "big fix" and "improvements" were the removal (or departure) of some assistant coaches. It is even less heartening that the said positions haven't even begun to be filled.

Hate to say but the football program is a "holding pattern" for the athletic department. Too f-ed up to really make meaningful changes without addressing money to the issue, and too cheap or too overwhelmed by other issues to put together a solution at present.

Wondering if the same mindset holds at the end of next football season, and the *BIG* then solution is just to let the Bailiff's contract expire naturally.

To be blunt, the program (imo) is screwed even more.... who in the right mind (who has ability) will this clown act be able to recruit with this record and with this god-awful season with no meaningful commitment by the administration to move it forward?

So, a year of godawful football recruitment, followed by another bad season in a dumpster fire conference. Someone is going to have one huge garbage pile of a program to try and rejuvenate (at some point in time).

Beginning the think we are going to have to follow DB with a Victor Frankenstein to make this rise from the dead....

Beginning to also think that this program is one monstrous-sized cluster-f--k at this point.

lol, yes there is a lot of sarcasm in that post.
1. We would never pay someone that salary...
2. We won't be letting Bailiff go...
3. HCIW never works out...
Still, I would love to have DeRuyter at DC.

Maybe JK could use his RESET button.

We have been told over and over how smart Rice athletes are. There should be no confusion.

Academic smarts have very little to do with coordinating a team and preparing it for the various situations that you see on the field. The fact that you see college teams more confused than you do NFL teams is not an indicator that the NFL gets the best and brightest.
