RIP Rick Parfitt
A rock and roll icon is gone too soon. I am crushed by his loss, just when he was about to record with his old band mates for the first time since 1981.

He didn't die from a heart attack, as everybody expected, but a damned infection after shoulder surgery.

****.

Sad. I just ran across this news somewhere else. Came to post it for TigerBill, but I should have known he had already heard it.

I post on a Quo fan board and dreaded going there lately because of fear of reading this. But when I saw it, it was surreal.

For those who don't know, Parfitt was voted the greatest rhythm guitarist of all time in Europe and the UK. As true rhythm guitarists go it's hard to argue. The guy was a machine. He also wrote some of the greatest rock songs of all times.

I honestly did not know the name until this thread and that prompted me to read up on the guy a bit. Nice list of accomplishments and resume. The dude lived a rock and rollers lifestyle. (Wikipedia) He once bragged about spending 1,000 pounds per week on cocaine and 500 pounds per week on vodka. 04-jawdrop

As far as the loss of talent goes, I will not miss 2016 and 2017 can't get here fast enough.

I agree. It's been awful.

Although Quo never really cracked the US market, everywhere else in the world they became rock gods. In 1985 the band had more or less broken up after a final End of the Road tour.

Bob Geldof called them and specifically asked them to get back together to open Live Aid, which they did.

If you like head-banging, they are officially given credit for being the first.

Total album sales are around 120 million. They had more top 40 hits in the UK than any band in history.

I had to post one video for those who never heard Parfitt before. One of the great rock songs of all time.

He wrote and sang this, from 1972's epic "Piledriver" album. Live versions from the period don't have very good sound.

I predict:

Celebrities will die in 2017 just as they did in 2015. 2016 is not an anomaly.

True. And it seems as if one of the first to go in 2017 just might be Charles Manson.

Though I don't think too many people will be mourning that one.

I thought this was a brilliant re-interpretation of a classic song. One guy, 4 guitar parts.

Well, I always say that I lost touch with popular music right after Three Dog Night. I assume this guy was after they did "Liar' and "Jeramiah was a Bulfrog" (Joy to the World). Am i correct?

Wrong band. Rick Parfitt was the rhythm guitarist for Status Quo. He was voted best Rhythm Guitarist of the past 30 years in Europe. Nobody else ever played like him before or since. Remarkable artist, too bad Americans never got to know the band in their heyday.
