Best/Worst UNCW hoops memories
Today I just wanted to take a break and look back to see what people felt were their best and worst UNCW moments. I'll just say what mine are off the top of my head:

Best

1. Hare's dunk /USC NCAA win.
2. Dahl's 2000 CAA final heave/beating U of R for UNCW's 1st Dance.
3. Near upset of #2 and eventual 1987 National Champion Indiana.
4. Blizzard's NCAA performance 2002 NCAA 2nd round vs Indiana.
5. Rowsom's banked 3 ball to beat ECU to advance to the 1987 CAA semis.
6. TJ Carter beating GMU at GMU at the buzzer in 2008.
7. Denzel Ingram's big 3 in the 2016 CAA Final to go to the Dance.

Worst

1. Drew Nicholas 2003 buzzer beater to rob UNCW of another NCAA win.
2. C of C's Donte Draper's buzzer beater at UNCW in 2001.
3. Navy's David Robinson's 1987 buzzer beater at Trask.
4. ECU's Othello Meadows 1996 buzzer beater at ECU to nip the Hawks.
5. Losing at the buzzer to Southern Illinois in '86 the following night after IU.
6. Blowing a big lead against GW in the 2006 NCAA and losing at the end.
7. Losing Brownell shortly after the GW game and being irrelevant for a decade.

RE: Best/Worst UNCW hoops memories
Pretty much covered it all, so i'll go with my personal best and worst

Best - Stuart Hare dunk to seal the win over USC. Getting to the dance was always great, but this win put us on the map. His dunk put an exclamation point on the win.

Worst - David Robinson buzzer beater at Trask. This was and still is easily the biggest game ever played at Trask and I was a student in the stands. Trask, with 6,100 in attendance, went from the loudest place I had ever been to the quietest after one shot. UNCW had been on the cusp of major upsets all year, and kept losing on last second shots. We had just lost to GMU, Wake, Indiana and Southern Illinois by one point, when Indiana was ranked #2 in the nation. Brian Rowsom had gotten to the point he could go toe to toe with Robinson and he held his own in this game.

'82,
That's my bad because the Hare Dunk was my favorite also. I'll edit my post.

RE: Best/Worst UNCW hoops memories
One year we hosted Princeton and got hosed with a game tieing shot for the Tigers being allowed even though it was after the buzzer. We ended up losing in OT. One of my earliest games. I remember being one mad little boy that night

RE: Best/Worst UNCW hoops memories
Not necessarily number one but what about our first acc win - beating state in Raleigh? Not a great state team but it was a first for us.

Worst had to be that damn maryland game.

Best/Worst UNCW hoops memories
Excellent thread Bill, I love a good list!

I'll start with the worst:

I would rank the Brownell debacle as even worse than the Maryland loss. At the time we couldn't possibly recognize the impending disaster that would follow especially in the form of the DePaolo/Mehrtens duo and our APR plummeting. But with hindsight to guide us, that would easily take the top spot. We're back on top now but watching this program slowly enter the doldrums for nearly a decade, the first 2 of those years happening when I was still a student, was far more painful than even Satan Nicholas' game winner.

Thus, I go with the following order, with the top 3 being interrelated:

1. Brownell debacle

2. Hiring of Mehrtens

3. The APR disaster

4. Maryland loss

5. George Washington loss

And now the best, which is a longer list, thankfully!

I'm too young to have gotten to enjoy many of the good times already listed, but here's mine:

1. Rushing the court as a student in '06 after beating Hofstra.

2. Rushing the court as an alum (but still in the student section) in Baltimore after our 2016 win over Hofstra.

3. Hiring of Kevin Keatts

4. TJ Carter's buzzer beater to beat Northeastern on Homecoming in '06

5. The firing and departure of Kelly Mehrtens

6. End of Depaolo's tenure as Chancellor.

7. The comeback win over Delaware in '06

8. Watching the 2002 USC game (the parts I could see when CBS felt like moving to the game) with my Dad in New Jersey, when my sister was already attending and knowing already I'd be a student starting in '04

9. John Goldsberry's 8 for 8 from
3 against Maryland

10. Denzel Ingram's clutch shots (too many to list)

Honorable mention: The feels I get every time Chris Flemmings perfectly executes a "eurostep".

So 08, are you giving Capaccio and the two lawyers a pass? Merhtens was just a puppet. The damage was already done before she arrived.

My favorites:

1. 2002 NCAAT win

2. Goldsberry's NCAAT record.

3. Amber Bryant's year in the student section.

4. I can't remember who it was, but the home game in '06 (my senior year) when we were down by like 9-11 pts or something close to that with a minute and a half or so left and we came back to win.

5. Home game in '06 when my friend and I were berating VCU's Capel on his way to the locker room at the half when his uncle, Jeff Capel (VCU head coach), came back from the tunnel and took a hook swing at us with a closed fist (missed of course) before being pulled back by security.

6. Jose Juan Berea getting so mad at Amber Bryant and her friends that he was given a technical after he turned the ball over for taking his headband off and throwing it at them. Shame shame.

7. The huge lead vs GW in the NCAAT in '06. RIP.

8. Beckham Wyrick's sister. (Relatable since he was such a badass on the court.)

9. Printing off about 1,000 "Fire Cappacio" flyers off via university printers and posting them all over campus the night they announced Brownell's contract wouldn't be renewed.

10. The arrival of Coach Keatts and the re-emergence of our program.

Honorable Mention... because it hasn't happened yet but maybe it's time Amber Bryant goes back to UNCW for post-grad classes.

Nah there's just more names than I know to blame for Brownell, and I'm not sure what % of blame gets divvied up for each, so I put that all under the "Brownell debacle" label. No one gets a pass for any of that.

I should have also included DePaolo's firing of Peg in that mix too.

You can't get any lower than spreading rumors that Brownell was a racist.

Here is the box score of that game. It was actually 2005.

Proff,
That State game was big for UNCW but State wasn't any good. It was the first game of the year though and Big Darren Moore had a really good debut game. He went for like 15 and 10 boards. I was loving the way he dominated and when he was in shape, UNCW was tough to deal with down low. Heck, they had him and the "Crime dog" Preston McGriff doing damage at times. Sheriff played along side of Darren that year with Preston sitting out.

Like I said, state wasn't very good but we did get the acc monkey off our back (temporarily).

The return of Amber Bryant would be nice. I'm certain she could get into grad school. After all didn't she graduate "lordy how come"? Ah those were good times!

Jesus. Didn't know that happened. I was only a Sophomore at UNCW at the time, and while I felt I was decently connected with the goings on there was a lot I had no clue about.
