OT: UNC Cheating Update
So here is an excerpt from this article:

"The NCAA's new allegations include an extra-benefit charge involving men's basketball and cover a period from the 2002-03 season through the 2010-11 season. The Tar Heels won national championships in 2005 and '09. If the NCAA, through its committee on infractions, concludes that some of the players on that team received extra benefits, they could be deemed ineligible, which could lead to serious charges, including potentially vacating those titles."

A vacated title sting more than regular vacated losses, sure, but how about they give back all the money from those tourney credits and how about they take three or four scholarships away for five years and how about they have a no TV and no post season for three years.

OT: UNC Cheating Update
I think the NCAA and UNC are secretly in cahoots to drag this thing out so long that people get tired of talking about it. They are hoping, eventually, that the public will cry out 'move on! UNC has suffered enough already!' so they can dish out some silly punishment that ignores the fact that what they did was so severe that it would have put many schools' accreditation at risk.

Blue bloods can only be deterred from breaking rules by five year long death penalties or severe scholarship limits that guarantee 10 to 15 win records for five years or longer. Otherwise, violations are simply the easily absorbed cost of doing business and deemed acceptable risk for received benefits.

I think this is lack of institutional control and UNC should receive a vacation from playing sports for a couple of years.

Oh- I would settle for having the UNC leadership taking control of the athletic department like NC State's did over the Valvano alligations.

Penn State should have been shut down for a few years. UNC needs recruiting restrictions and raising the academic standards for a few years.

See, I disagree, I think UNC had full and complete institutional control of the situation. Without the institution being in control it would be hard for the AD to set up fake programs and degrees that didn't require anything of the athletes.

They should coin the phrase "immoral institutional control" for use with UNC.

Largest Academic Scandal in the history of the NCAA was well organized and had the fingerprints of many different departments at UNC all over it. The Coaches can try and deny it but they knew exactly where to send problem kids to keep them academically eligible. If the NCAA does not take a major step against this massive fraud and cheating scandal at UNC the NCAA will show itself to be a complete and utter joke.

If the NCAA comes down soft on UNC, the power conferences could use this as the leverage they need to break away from the NCAA and self govern.

Half the staff at the NCAA are probably UNC grad's. CEO of ESPN and Delany of the Big Ten. They are well positioned politically to skate. That's 20 years of academic fraud and they will virtually get away with it free. Moral to the story lawyer up when you get your notice. The Carolina Way.

The NCAA has already proven themselves to be a "complete and utter joke" on many occasions, why should this scandal be any different?

I suspect that the magnitude of these allegations will likely spell the end of Elon Basketball for the rest of this decade..... In fact the shrapnel of this may even hit the UNC Wilmington program too....

I see it completely opposite. If the NCAA substantially hammers UNC, then the other power conferences will know they are vulnerable to the same treatment and hence hasten their NCAA exit.

Thats why they (NCAA's own University Membership) came up with the silly "vacating past losses" fake penalty years ago...as coaches want ANY penalty other than lost scholarships...because that can cripple a program for years (i.e. see recent case studies on UCF Football and Basketball...severe scholarship losses for actions UNC would laugh at).

But the opposite is those schools negatively affected by UNC's CHEATING. Take my school, Illinois. We lost (were cheated out of) the 2005 title by biased reffing and ineligible players.

It sucks that Illinois SHOULD have won it's first national title in Men's basketball. At the very least, UNC should not be allowed to claim it.
Not coming down hard on UNC would open the door for much worse cheating.

If they try to exit BECAUSE of the penalties on UNC, they have a hard time convincing anyone (including the federal government that they're anything but a pro sports league). On the other hand if the NCAA doesn't drop the hammer, they can form thier own league on the basis of needing stricter penalties and oversight to ensure that the proper amount of emphasis is put on the academics of their student athletes (or some such BS-high-horse that is the opposite of what they actually stand for).
