Multiple bowl games with losing record
North Texas will play Army in the Heart of Dallas Bowl on Tuesday morning, despite being just 5-7 on the season. They also played in the 2001 New Orleans bowl despite being 5-6 because they won the Sun Belt conference that year.
I haven't paid that close attention to the other 5-7 teams that have gone bowling recently thanks to the numerous bowl games played, but am I correct in assuming North Texas will be the first school to have gone bowling twice despite having a losing record during the regular season?

I don't know the answer to your question, but you did forget to mention that when they kick the ball off at the HOD on Tuesday, North Texas will be looking to beat Army for the second time this season. The same Army team that beat AAC champs Temple and their runner up Navy.
North Texas was 1-11 last season. Going 5-7 under a new coach is a good turnaround, especially when you look at the teams we played on our schedule (WKU 11-3, LA Tech 9-5, Florida 8-4, Middle Tennessee 8-4, Army 7-5, and Southern Miss 7-6). Over half the teams on our schedule this season are playing in bowl games.
In the end, or grades got us into the Heart of Dallas Bowl. Sure I would have loved to reach the 6 win mark, but knowing that are students are getting rewarded for the work they do in the classroom is also important.

Great turnaround for North Texas part of their earning the bowl game is a high APR score.
I remember when twenty wins was a sure NCAA invite and really meant something.
I think NMSU went 7-4 and sisn't make a bowl game Texas ST has been eligible twice without going bowling that seems unfair
There is really no way to reward every eligible team without dipping into 5-7 teams. The current situation is really helpful for NMSU and U Mass win and go bowling.

I know what you mean. North Texas has finished bowl eligible in more then 20 seasons without getting an invite. 30 years ago it was much harder to earn a bowl birth.
At times I think there are too many bowls. Then I think about all those seasons we should have been in a bowl. Fans of programs like Southern Miss, LA Tech, and others can certainly empathize.
