Free Throws
How can we be so bad at free throws. We shot 11 extra free throws than Marshall, yet they made 2 more than us.

RE: Free Throws
This has been driving me crazy for years. My knowledge of basketball is next to nil. But, it seems to me that shooting free throws does not require strength, height, agility, quickness or any of the other skills that go with a talented player. In other words, it is probable that you could take a 13 year old and with enough practice and coaching he/she could become very good at making these shots. It also seems to me that this is the one aspect of the game where it would be easiest to pick up a few points every game. So, why in the hell don't coaches develop the players to improve in this area? If it is a mental issue, then hire a psychologist to work with the players.
I just don't get it!
Tonight they hit a higher percentage from beyond the arc than they did from the foul line. And, to add salt to the wound, Marshall goes 12 of 12 from the line.

RE: Free Throws
They should be better at FT shooting than what they have been this year. Mick has mentioned it. But this game was beyond belief.

A 69 year old Billy Cunningham recently made 24 of 25.

During a game? Incredible.

RE: Free Throws
Mick doesn't care about offense. It's for "friends and family", right? I'm guessing that means they don't spend much practice time on FTs. And if they do, just more evidence that we desperately need an assistant to focus on offense.

No a shoot off vs. former XU Redford

The assistant coach at our high school growing up was into his 50's an challenged us one day to a competition. We would do as many push-ups and crunches as he made consecutive free throws...He stopped after 102.

FTs are all about repetitive motion, much like a golf swing. If you work enough, you'll turn into a pretty great free throw shooter. I remember my junior year I had a torn ACL and couldn't do much more than shoot free throws for much of the year. I went from around 60% my sophomore year to just over 84% my senior year on twice as many attempts. It's all about working, and unfortunately there are other, more entertaining, things these guys probably have to do.

Of all the things to harp on Mick for, FTs aren't the tree you should bark up. That is one of the few parts of basketball that is 100% on the players.

When Johnson got injured while shooting, why did Scott a 46 percent shooter take the shots?

Really? No technique required? No issues with the mechanics of shooting that could be corrected? GMAFB.

somebody said that if a player is injured and has to leave the floor on a play he was fouled, the other team gets to pick the free throw shooter. I guess it prevents a team from faking an injury to a bad FT shooter in a critical part of the game and replacing him with one of their best FT shooters. It makes sense I suppose.

RE: Free Throws
I wouldn't have been all that upset (a little, but not a lot) had we lost that game, and it allowed the consequences of poor free-throw shooting to sink in. But, who knows if it really WOULD sink in?

Their foul shooting was painful last night. I still think they'll ultimately be fine from the foul line

If memory serves me correctly they've been solid from the line as a team the past couple of years. Not sure what is going on this year. Even Caupain is missing them at a high number.

That's the thing that really gets me. They ARE better shooters than that. Concentration and attention to detail, as it pertains to FTs, seem to be poor at this point.

I think different guys have different issues.

Mick referred to Gary having some mechanics he wanted to clean up.

He's also mentioned Troy's mental problems of putting far too much pressure on himself. When you're sitting on the line and have time to think about it that's not necessarily a good thing. These two were the main culprits.

I also think when people start to see others struggling it's contagious. Had Troy stepped to the line early and hit two instead of missed it may have set a different tone.

Huh? This year they rank 308 (out of 347 teams and in the prior three years they ranked 144, 248 and 145. That is not "solid" in my book.

As for the comment that the problem is mental, that is where the shrink comes into play. Hire someone to work on that aspect...might be money well spent.
