I agree that Army wouldn't join and would be better off with a 4 game alliance. I think it would help them a great deal as you see conferences move to 9 and 10 conference games there are a lot less opportunities to schedule some of these teams. By locking up 4 with the American and having Air Force and Navy they have half their slate full every year. Given our diversity they can have games in Florida and Texas every year or so which are great recruiting grounds. Plus we could add them to our bowl alliances sort of like the ACC did with Notre Dame as well which is less burdensome than them trying to strike their own deals especially when history suggests you aren't likely to fill the spots and the bowl will be left finding a team to play.
Helps the American add TV inventory vs an opponent TV likes which should incrementally help the TV deal and also helps them in the bowl mix by potentially landing a better bowl lineup with them as another pawn tv and bowl partners like.
I personally am for an alliance and not membership. I would create this alliance and add Wichita St in b-ball and then have ESPN on the phone to rework the TV deal and to discuss future bowl partners. Neither of these things would tie your hands if there are seismic shifts in the future either.

I can see why this would work. You could sign deals to play four AAC schools a year-Temple and UConn yearly, then on a rotating basis with each of the Texas and Florida schools (so you'd play USF/UCF/Houston/SMU once every four years).
