I agree. Tubby is a great guy, solid coach and at this point, no-nonsense. However, I cannot see how he'll be able to elevate this program at this point. Right now, the program is in desperate need for some excitement. I will be honest: Tubby would've been a great replacement for Cal in that CJP lucked into some of the best/deepest high school Memphis talent in a long time.
Imagine if Tubby had JJ, Adonis, Chris Crawford, Tarik Black under his tutelage. Tubby isn't going to be a great recruiter, but JJ, Adonis, Crawford and Tarik were pretty much a lock to be Tigers no matter who was the coach and Tubby would've done much better than CJP with that roster.

I am a Tiger thru and thru. But I also have a family. I'll deal with the following:
1) being downtown (with pocket knife and tazer)
2) paying high prices for concessions
3) downtown parking prices
But I'm only doing these things to see a decent game. Who wants to see Incarnate Word?! Our schedule is pathetic!

How are you able to go through security at the FedExForum doors with a pocket knife and tazer?

I agree ... ! Winning in the short-run is definitely the key. But I also think that a good 2017 recruiting class would do a lot to generate excitement and support for the program going into next year ... !!!

Downtown Memphis is very safe relative to the amount of people. I'm there fairly often and have never felt threatened.

RE: BB attendance figures
I can point to one game in particular when a lot of the fans said "screw it"
That beatdown to UConn at home in the first round of the AAC tourney
Hardly anyone went to Raleigh for the NCAA that year when the year before we had quite a few fans at Auburn Hills
Just look at attendance since the 2014 season

Same way inmates get drugs into prison. The technical term is "kiestering."
I personally would never go to such lengths but to each his own

RE: BB attendance figures
Attendance is tied to performance but also in response to the opponent quality. Right now our program strength (lack of it) & poor OOC schedule have combined in the perfect storm to greatly affect interest in the program & attendance. It's just that simple.

The perfect storm is getting a big out of Memphis and have a Memphis starting 5 make a run next year.
That would fill the stadium completely if marketed correctly.

Really need a break like this...a hometown heroes type team to win the AAC and make a deep run. Heck, just a splash recruit would pump some life in the program. Don't see it happening though.

Josh Pastner caused ALL of that.
We weren't as good and it wasn't worth it for teams like Gonzaga to play us home and home anymore when they can play other teams with better rpis

Imagine if the taser goes off while hidden. People would say that poor guy had the worst seizure imaginable.
"1) being downtown (with pocket knife and tazer)
2) paying high prices for concessions
3) downtown parking prices"
And add:
4) liability of taser misfire
5) possible cavity search

This is what happens when a program is left in the hands of a child who has no idea what he is doing.
Plus you have a coach now who thinks it's not part of his job responsibility to "recruit" fans.
Probably going to regret this, but...What are you talking about?

Are these figures announced attendance in terms of tickets sold OR is it actual people in the seats (due to the Grizzly clause)?
If these are tickets sold (rather than butts in the seats), this is not good, not good at all. I know that our early home schedule is not the greatest, but these figures just really seem to take the wind out of the sails of the program. I was in Memphis for CJP's first two years and attendance figures held up pretty well....had no idea if things are this bad right now attendance-wise.
Tickets sold and it will not get any better any time soon. While not making NCAA last two years had some effect. The success of the Griz have had a bigger effect.
Right now this is Grizzlies town and until that changes we will not see the massive numbers of the past.
This can change by either Tigers making deep runs into the NCAA or the Gris begin to miss the playoffs.
I do not see them missing the playoff any time soon.

The Grizz have nothing to do with it. 2 different fan bases
Back in 13-14 both teams were getting 15K plus most nights
In fact you could blame Tiger football's success more than the Griz IMO
The main culprit is JOSH PASTNER.

Right now the city of Memphis is a Grizzlies Basketball town. They own basketball in this town presently. As long as they continue to make it to second rounds of playoff they will continue to own town. When they stop making it to playoff then you will see their attendance drop and our increase. Unless Tigers begin to make very deep runs into post season.
