Good article about bowl industry getting stronger
http://www.si.com/college-football/2016/...boca-raton

Eye opening quote:

Quote:Americans like watching football, as evidence by the 2015 Russell Athletic Bowl—between non-traditional powers Baylor and North Carolina—doing the same rating (2.6) as the top-rated regular season college basketball (UNC-Duke) last year. The December bowl orgy is annually one of the most flush ratings runs for ESPN every year. What’s the most players who could sit out the postseason? A dozen? That’s not going to change anything.

Another one

Quote:In a suite high above FAU Stadium during the second quarter, American Athletic Conference commissioner Mike Aresco recalled his time as an executive at CBS when they televised an Indiana-Butler game in 2012 that ended in an overtime upset of the No. 1 Hoosiers. Aresco was thrilled until he saw the Gildan New Mexico Bowl—between Arizona and Nevada—crush it in the ratings by 1.9 to 1.5. “That’s when I realized,” he said, “football had become king.”

College basketball is completely irrelevant now, it's pretty much on par with college baseball

College BB only matters in March. There is nothing more irrelevant than regular season college BB. We now have pre-season tournaments, the regular season, then conference tournaments THEN the Big Dance.

I tell people 'you know there WAS a time when college BB was very close to being equal to college FB and that time was the 80s. That is when you could remember college BB players since they stayed four years and you could actually have a vested interest in following a player's development.'

Since Michigan's Fab Five, college BB has gone down pretty much every year and when Garnett went straight out of high school it's only gotten worse. College FB, on the other hand, seems to get better every year.

No doubt FB is the bell cow but IMO March Madness blows the bowl games out of the water..

Football is the bell cow for who? Football loses money for 90% of schools. It only stays solvent with income from boosters and profits from more cost effective sports like basketball.

Uh, no they didn't. The line opened at 4.5 then moved to 7. They didn't get enough action on Memphis. They lost money.

It's a little less than 90% - but still bad.

At the same time, how many schools do you think make money in basketball? And there are zero other cost effective sports. Everything else - outside of football and men's basketball - loses money everywhere.

The top 10 money makers last year were:
Oregon
Texas
Michigan
Alabama
Ohio State
LSU
Oklahoma
Wisconsin
Florida
Texas A&M

These are all P5's. And they are all football schools.

Classic.

I'm begging you - please try to explain this to me. It will be hilarious for everyone and give us all a good laugh and something to talk about at Christmas.

The line moved heavier on WKU, genius.

Books make money on the whole but just going on that single line alone, they lost. The line sharply moved in WKU's favor. Lot of late money was bet on WKU. WKU covered. Those bettors got paid.

RE: Good article about bowl industry getting stronger
I will never bet on post-season college football because there are just too many variables. The lay-off alone is enough to make the bowl season like a whole new season.

But I do rest assured that there are geniuses like Bluto out there betting. Maybe he props things up enough, that I can find a good line every once in a while.

It's like what Bob Knight said about playing LSU. Something like, "I was worried about losing. Then I looked down the bench and saw Dale sitting on the other side, and I knew we still had a chance."

Don't mind telling you. But why do you ask? It's actually not too difficult to figure out.
