This hurts bad.

USF really needs to make a move. This is nearing rock bottom.

Really surprising... I thought coach O was going to be the real deal. Something not good is going on...

Jahmal McMurray transferring from USF basketball

The mediocrity-besieged melodrama that has become USF basketball took another abrupt twist Tuesday when USF sophomore PG Jahmal McMurray requested -- and was granted -- his release.

"This morning, Jahmal McMurray informed me of his intent to transfer from USF," Coach Orlando Antigua said in a school news release issued an hour before Tuesday night's home game against Northern Illinois.

McMurray was averaging 20.3 points per game this season since his return, after being suspended for the first six games of the season.

A member of the American Athletic Conference's All-Rookie team last season, McMurray briefly explored his NBA draft status this past summer, but withdrew his named from consideration well before the deadline and never hired an agent.
He becomes the 13th player with eligibility remaining to depart (or be dismissed from) the program since Stan Heath's dismissal as coach in March 2014.

Bummer. Potentially best player at @UAbasketball AA Camp counselor games this summer. How did he get out of Topeka?

Crazy. Antigua has had 13 players transfer (or dismissed) in his barely more than 2 years on the job. They just lost to NIU tonight.

McMurray is a Kansas product. He did get some Wichita State interest coming out of HS. Bill Self liked him too. I wouldn't be surprised to see Gregg Marshall get him. Perhaps we should grab Wichita State and keep this kid in the American.

Arguably the team's best player, the sophomore's departure adds to a brutal nine-month stretch for USF (5-5) and Antigua, who dismissed two top players in the offseason and saw his brother and assistant, Oliver Antigua, resign amid a July NCAA probe for possible academic fraud issues.
It also leaves an instant void in the lineup a week before AAC play commences.
"We move forward," said Antigua, who has had 13 players transfer or dismissed since taking over for the fired Stan Heath in March 2014.

Excluding two using their 5th year elsewhere, and one leaving to return to Israel, Temple has had two players transfer in Fran Dunphy's 11 years at Temple.

He was a first-time head coach. It was a gamble that just didn't pay off.

I really thought COA was going to be able to get it done. Clearly he can't, time to move on. I've seen wheelchair teams that could beat USF.

Can he transfer in conference? Tubby needs some more players that can contribute.

He's already kept his job once, when his brother took the fall for the academic fraud issues.
I think its reaching a point now where a mid-season firing should be on the table. He's never won 10 games in a year, and this season is likely to be worse than the first 2 without McMurray.

2014–15, South Florida, 9–23, 3–15, 11th
2015–16, South Florida, 8–25, 4–14, T–9th

I think he will get fired at the end of season. Whoever comes in will only have 1 scholarship available and that's because of McMurray leaving. So I rather they came in at the end of this year and have a full year to recruit.

Unless you think a Coach will do something (maybe again) against NCAA rules...not much is accomplished with a mid-year firing (other than giving a salary boost to an asst who slides into interim HC role)...as you won't make another permanent hire till late March/early April (when you can interview top targets after their seasons are over).

Yes, he is a dead man walking...but the odds that USF would select someone who is not currently coaching is slim, very slim...so no need for a mid season firing.

So far, our Aussie is doing well. He's moved into the starting lineup.

He's the guy who will run the team once Antigua sees the unemployment line. This is SOP with our AD. He hired dick tomey just in case he needed to fire Taggart last year. Fortunately for us, Taggart worked out and we get a free year for strong.
