Fundraising question (concerning AD)
Questions... Have any of you ever seen anything like this come out of our athletic dept? I don't believe that I ever have. Would it encourage you to donate more and be a part of the program if you knew there was a vision?

RE: Fundraising question (concerning AD)
True story...I've gotten more calls from La Tech this year asking for money that I have from USM and I have absolutely no connection to La Tech and have no idea how they got my contact info.
I'm a foundation donor and a multi-year season ticket holder and had to go to the Ferlise Center to get my tickets because they never made it to me. At this point, I'm inclined to believe that not only does our athletic dept. not have a plan, they don't have a clue.

Honestly they are understaffed and under funded. Ask other fans of C-USA schools and they will give you similar complaints. At some point it's not just "they are incompetent and don't care".

Eh, when you see how they work and what they do, you find out that that's exactly the problem. They are incompetent and lazy. Anytime someone suggests an idea that seems fairly obvious, they shrug it off. They want to do what they've always done, which isn't working.

Why is it so difficult to send people out to USM grads in a 100 mile radius and meet with them face to face and try to sell a season ticket or Eagle Club membership? Why do we not call people who are 2+ states away and say "Hey, I know you probably can't make many home games, but I was wondering if you'd be willing to donate to the Eagle Club to invest in our student athletes. If you do and you find yourself in Hattiesburg for a game, call me up and I'll make sure you have a great ticket on me." It's that simple. People far away can feel like they're giving to the program and being part of it.

But nah, let's call the same 200 people in the Hattiesburg/Laurel area and hope they pony up...again.

I have gotten one robocall from LA Tech. I suspect it is because I bought tickets through their ticket office for the game in Ruston last season. You picked yours up just before I did, so mystery solved. Now, why you can't get your tickets delivered to your house, I can't figure out.

I forgot that I had to get my tickets through Tech last year. Mystery solved, indeed. Thanks, my rememberer ain't what it used to be.

Incompetent and lazy is probably pretty close to true. I took them up on the offer for the free tickets to La Tech and went by to pick them up through the drive thru. The guy working in there looked at me twice without coming over to the window and then pointed at the buzzer thing. I pressed it and then he walked over and asked if he could help me. You really have to want to go to a ballgame to deal with those folks sometimes.

RE: Fundraising question (concerning AD)
Back to the original post, that particular document is little more than a wish list on glossy paper. It lists numerous goals, which are nice to have as a road map and all, but it's all just obvious, fundamental stuff like "sell more season tickets" and "evaluate facilities for needed improvements." There's a whole lot of "what," but nothing in the way of "how," so no, it's not particularly inspiring.

Don't forget the additional absense of "when", "where", and "who" from the plan as well.

RE: Fundraising question (concerning AD)
I went to the Auburn game in 2007, purchased tickets through their site, and still receive emails asking if I want to sign up for season tickets and other packages.

Other than getting the occasional email about the Eagle Club, I hardly ever receive such correspondence from USM.

To be fair a USM representative did come into my office just last month and pleaded USM's case. A face to face visit certainly helps. It's actually been a while since I was a member of Eagle Club...longer than I realized. Various reasons I haven't rejoined over the years and I don't feel an ounce of guilt over it but......USM does seem to be at a crossroads. The joke of a conference and it's tv contract have absolutely killed us. It's bad.....like really bad. I felt obligated and was happy to hand over a check.....a small one....but every bit helps. Probably a lost cause but at least I can say I contributed when the program needed it most.

Had my disabled son in the van with me so I didn't really feel the need to get him out with a drive-thru and he acknowledged me as I pulled in. I find that most folks get kinda pissy when they acknowledge you and you ring the buzzer anyway. And the free tickets were in addition to the 6 season tickets that I maintain and I was getting them for another poster on here that had switched jobs and was waiting for his first paycheck and was a little cash-strapped at the time. Any other questions regarding things?

The "buzzer thing" actually initiates the speaker system. If you don't press that, they can't hear your request.

They should have a sign that says press buzzer for service. And two for one slushes Thursdays 2-4. They could ask Lamar County to pay for it.
