P5 of course. The winner of the IL-PCL series in baseball isn't the national champ.

There's a G5 national champion?

RE: G5 national champion vs p5 national champion
Assuming there's some type of actual breakaway within the next decade (who knows), both groups could still refer to their champion as a national champion. FCS refers to their winners as national champions, but no one sees them as THE actual national champion.

First, there aren't two divisions in FBS. If there ever are, then each could have its own champion, just like FCS has a champion, D II has one, D III, etc.

One difference now is that the FBS champion (which is now the CFP National Champion) can not claim to be an NCAA champion, since that organization doesn't sponsor a championship.

As far as the legality, I don't know that anyone has, or can, copyright the term "national champion" or use it as a trademark. Maybe we have an attorney that specializes in this field of law that could enlighten us on the subject.

G5 national champion vs p5 national champion
There are two divisions in FBS
G5
P5
The p5 have a play off for p5 conferences only
The G5 need their own playoff system, one that includes all 5 conferences
This can happen without a true FBS split
However if this were to ever happen, how long do you think the P5 " axis 5 " to change the " FBS" for their conferences to something to indicate a higher level, l fully believe the seeds are already growing.
College football will never be the same from here on out that's for sure

This.

It is obvious to anyone with an average IQ or better that there are two, separate divisions now within FBS. The "g5" access bid is ridiculous and an obvious sop to avoid any anti-trust implications. But when you have 5 "Power" conferences making literally 10X (at worst) more than anyone in the 5 "g" conferences, of course you have a separate division. As time goes on, the two divisions will have as much in common as FBS and FCS have in common.

So, to the OP... Would you have the FBS playoff winner play the FCS Champion?

So why wait? Let the G5 split and do it's thing...

Is your thought process that the G5 should threaten a split, in hopes that they will somehow strengthen their position and gain more access? Not happening...

The G5 has had been of opportunity to split, well before becoming the "G5".

Honestly, the simplest thing, for those who value a split, is for those schools who wish to stay in the FBS continue to do so and those wanting to "split" drop to FCS.

It's all Division I.

RE: G5 national champion vs p5 national champion
Every time a new FBS conference is mentioned as a possibility.
Either as a split of CUSA or new WAC or MVFC whatever the G5 not wanting to share is given as a reason it won't happen.

Why do people think the P5 will keep sharing they have no obligation to share with the G5 in the next contract.
The Gap is getting bigger and is already greater between the bottom G4 and the P5 vs Top four FCS and bottom G4.
With unlimited snacks paying for parents to come to games FCOA and more to come the G5 are already getting squeezed.
Schools will pick and choose which of the P5 initiative they can afford .
widening the gap and giving reason to drop the CFP payments.
When the time comes for a new CFP contract and no G5 has come close to participating in it dropping the G5 payouts will be a real option.
I don't see a playoff for the G5 the Access Bowl pick is the champion win or lose.

Western Michigan is this years G5 champion.

RE: G5 national champion vs p5 national champion
Why would the G5 conferences want to split from the FBS? And who thinks they actually do want to? Those conferences are more concerned that the P5 will split from them than the other way around.

The FBS hasn't continued to grow, at the expense of the FCS, because schools want to leave it. They grow because schools want to be part of it, each for their own reasons. They want to be a part of it despite the disparity in strength and resources between them and the P5 conferences. That disparity isn't new, and it hasn't kept anybody from wanting to move up from FCS.

There may be some fans who want to see a split. But not many schools that do.

I was not talking about an FBS split
Iam only saying that p5 has a playoff and G5 doesn't, why not ?
College football has been on the fast track of change for awhile now, so my be its time G5 conferences to step it up and do this
The powers to be in college football do not want to see a real split
As long as the p5 can keep the G5 in their fold they can keep the G5 conferences down
" keep your friends close but keep your enemies closer "
This is the MO for the p5, it keeps the recruiting all theirs and keeps tv money down, fans , viewers and all that stuff

Only if the "breakaway" you describe includes all sports. The P5 breaks away from everyone in basketball who isn't P5. That would include the Big East. Good idea right? I didn't think so.
Cheers!

There is no P5 playoff separate from the CFP, of which all FBS conferences are members. Every FBS team - including independents - is eligible for selection as one of the four semifinalists in the country. If the G5 conferences want to try to get a playoff of their own, they would first have to withdraw from the CFP and give up the money they get from that. Which G5 conferences would be willing to do that? And what would they gain that is better than where they currently are?

The Big East is still is receiving a magnitude higher compensation than the other "g" conferences. Clearly, they would be in the same Division as the other Power conferences. So...yeah...if a "Split" were to happen they would go with the rest of the "Haves." Without a doubt.

RE: G5 national champion vs p5 national champion
The biggest reason there isn't a G5 playoff isn't because the P5 conferences don't want them to have one. It is because the best G5 teams wouldn't want to play in one.

Does anyone believe that a Boise State or Houston or Western Michigan would prefer to play against another G5 opponent on a small stage instead of playing an Ole Miss or Florida State or Wisconsin on a big one? Those non-semifinal NY6 games may be meaningless exhibitions to some, but they mean everything to the G5 school that gets to play in one.

No G5 conference is going to willingly deny its champion the chance to play in one.

There is no P5 playoff. There is an FBS playoff that is rigged in such a way that a G5 has virtually no chance---but the G5 is "theoretically" included in the playoff and shares in the profits from said playoff. The thesis for your OP is incorrect.

To address the real world situation---the G5 is better off playing at the top level of football even if they have absolutely no chance of ever being national champion. Creating their own playoff relegates them to same irrelevance that FCS is met with---that's not a fate worth chasing.

The reality is, beyond this board---very few people could tell you who won the FCS championship last year. Nobody cares and nobody watches. The general public cares a great deal about the top level of football and will watch games involving that division---even those involving teams that may never win a national championship. Unfortunately, the American public doesn't care much for any other levels of collegiate football. FCS is simply not of interest to most football viewers---and it will never be. FCS is viewed about the same as minor league baseball. Its acknowledged that there are some good players there---but its not deemed worth watching by the vast majority of the general public. Don't expect the non-power conferences to voluntarily adopt that same fate.

Because its what the G5 becomes if they separate from the P5 to create their own "playoff". It will be seen as a process to define the 65th best team in the nation. Nobody will care. Just as today, nobody cares who the 129th best team in the nation is (which is basically the public perception of the FCS playoff process).

Well Iam thinking that a G5 playoff would generate more fan interest over a short period of time, and would help get more recruites to sign with G5 teams
Also Amazon prime is looking for college sport content, so this might be just what their looking for, just my guess
