Wilkie, you are correct on an "official" level, but the issue isn't "should the g5 form a new division?" They have already been segregated into a new division, and as time goes on the "g" teams will become increasingly less competitive with the "Power" conference teams.
Seriously... At it's
CLOSEST point, the disparity between the "Power" conferences and the "g" conferences is
4X in terms of money. At it's more typical margin, it's close to
10X the amount of $$$ coming to each Power conference team vs. the amount coming into a "g" conference team.
Let me throw this out there as an example. WVU just re-signed their DC to a contract that, before incentives, is around $1 Million a season. That's for a
Defensive Coordinator. And that's going to be a lower amount as time goes on. $1 Million/year is a rough analog for what the average "g" conference team can afford for their HEAD COACH. How in the hell are "g" teams supposed to be able to retain quality coaches and coordinators when they cannot afford to pay them for salaries that coordinators are going to make in the "Power" conferences?
Yeah, I get it... There's only the "D1- FBS and D1-FCS" as official "divisions." But that's not what has happened in reality. And it's not the "g" conferences that wanted it this way.
