Ok .... the Frank Cuervo story
Still hearing some disturbing news about some kind of job abandonment from the 2nd level in command who oversees Development, Licensing, Marketing, Video Services, ticketing, IMG, Sales.

WTH? Not taking/returning phone calls or showing up to work?

I think he may be officially gone but not sure, he's still on the Staff Directory on the Athletics website. We still have ESPN Football cups at UAB Basketball games.

At what point would too many jobs with previous employers be a red flag?

"When working with my staff, I tell them not to be afraid of failure. I would rather have someone make a mistake going 100 miles per hour and commit an error of commission, rather than sit back and not take action, thus in my mind, committing an error of omission."

That's a pretty stupid analogy and comes off like somebody trying to sound like a suave business buzzword guy. If I drive 100 miles per hour without a seatbelt, that's a bigger mistake than driving 10 miles per hour without a seatbelt. I typically hate business/industry quotes like this that leave no middle ground (which is where most decisions are made and things happen)...it's either ALL HOLDS BARRED or nothing at all. What? That's not how things work.

Then there's this gem when asked about the future of college athletics marketing:
"It’s no secret that the ability to generate revenue has become paramount in this business. "

Isn't that paramount to any business? And the point of "marketing" in general? I wonder why that isn't a secret.

Maybe I've just spent too much time reading business case studies during Finals week, though. 07-coffee3

RE: Ok .... the Frank Cuervo story
I think that sports marketing requires something of a delicate balance. Yes, the institution wants to make as much money off of the athletic program as it can, both to help the program grow and to pay more money to the people doing the sales work. The other side of that is that the product that they sell is largely sold via the emotional attachment of the fans. Fans understand that their money and support means that the program has a better chance of improving. They also understand that they can only be squeezed so far before they can't afford to continue their support. If the money grab becomes too large or too obvious, or if the product on the floor stinks, the customers will start to walk away.

Management can buzzword all they want but the basics don't change much.

Is that the position that Coleman Barnes used to have? (if I remember the name correctly)

I received several voice mails from Coleman & he seemed down to earth.

Never heard from Cuervo.

RE: Ok .... the Frank Cuervo story
Mark Ingram hired Frank Cuervo and its a hire that is consistent with his LACK of leadership.

Why didn't mark announce this guy was let go months ago? Did he think we would not notice his colossal screw up? Why did he try and hide it from the stakeholders?
Who will take his place? What does Mark have against hiring "UAB" people?
We need "Birmingham" involved. The Foundation should have a say in this next hire because they know what success and marketing is. Ingram has no clue and is too pig headed to accept ideas or criticism. The Foundation is who has raised millions of dollars with zero help from Ingram. In fact he is a hindrance.

Rant over.......

RE: Ok .... the Frank Cuervo story
I've emailed Frank with no response, so it looks like he is gone. Is he still on the payroll? Why was he let go? Did he piss off a donor? Did he do something improper? The story from his previous time in Missouri comes back to mind.

Attalla is right in asking why his departure has been covered up. There are so many odd things surrounding the athletic department right now, when we should be gearing up for the glorious return of Blazer Football!
