There is something to say for momentum.

ASU won 8 of their last 9 games prior to the bowl game.

UCF had lost their last two prior to the bowl game and 4 of their last 7.

We made stupid mistakes and lost the turnover battle. States qb was around 50% completion percentage with two huge chunk plays providing a large amount of the 289 yards they put up. Special teams uncharacteristically hurt us. Part of that was a great kicking strategy by state and our unwillingness to put two returners in on punts. That fake punt didn't help with that. I don't think the coaches prepped the team in favor of resting the starters and concentrating on recruiting before the dead period. The online was flattened.
