AAC East goes Defensive... AAC West goes Offensive
These latest hires say a lot about the personalities on both sides of the AAC fence.

We will have two largely different focuses in the AAC according to divisional alignment. The 3 new hires in the East are all Defensive specialists.

Charlie Strong (USF)
Luke Fickell (Cincinnati)
Geoff Collins (Temple)

to add to

Bob Diaco (UConn)
Scottie Montgomery (ECU)
Scott Frost (UCF)

Pay special attention to the OC hires of these 3 new coaches in the East.

Since this division will play a lot of games in the Northern elements during the Winter, its looking like it'll be a tough, physical style well suited for the elements.

Contrast the AAC East to the AAC West, where Major Applewhite - an offensive minded coach - was just hired at Houston, and we have a rich blend of offensive stylists.

Major Applewhite (Houston)
Chad Morris (SMU)
Philip Montgomery (Tulsa)
Mike Norvell (Memphis)
Ken Niumatalolo (Navy)
Willie Fritz (Tulane)

Whether you like dynamic multiple offenses or gritty hard-nosed Defenses, there will be a little something for everybody in the AAC.

All of the hires look capable and hungry. Outside of Charlie Strong, they were all up-and-coming coaches waiting for their opportunity. Even Strong has a lot to prove after the way things ended at Texas.

2017 will offer a lot on intrigue.

He's in the running for Ole Miss OC. I am hoping we get him.

Gilbert is another Briles protégé that started off at a GA at Houston. It's fascinating to see this pollination make its way around.

College football has been changing though. I was surprised that the ratio went more defensive than offensive this cycle.

The trend seems to have been tipping offensive everywhere else. Names like PJ Fleck and Lincoln Riley have been typical for coaching search lists.

Fleck is more known for his recruiting than his offensive genius. Not that he isn't an offensive guy just he has never been a coordinator.

ECU needs to move to the west, because our program is pretty offensive.

I'm not convinced that a HC will lean a team towards the side of the ball he came from, although I can think of an example where they do and they don't real quick.

Sumlin was OC for OU before he came to UH and we were not known for good (much less great) defense during his time here.

Herman was OC at OSU but we didn't really "lean" towards offense under him. It was our defense under Orlando that I would say was really great.

I'm hoping CMA keeps the defense going, but also improves our offense as well.

The Charlie Strong hire really worked out well for the confererence.

Half the fun of competition is the personalities and when UC fired Tuberville it behooved us to bring a mix of name recognition and youth..

There's a fine line... because you don't want to bring in retreads.

We did good by bringing in Charlie Strong (and Major Applewhite as well), to go with Fickell and Collins. I'm pleased with how the AAC responded with these hires.

Excited for '17.
