"Twenty years ago, there were 18 bowl games"

Think about that. 36 teams, almost all probably 7-4 / 8-3 at worst. Now just look at the slop playing in 'bowl' games.

When ESPN can find filler with better ratings is when the minor bowls go away. Vegas can always find something to bet on.

Find this interesting from another point of view. Other sports are seeing this same thing happening to them.

In 2003 Brian France took over the organization his father and grandfather built. The new Title Sponsorship for the series Nextel signed a $75 million a year deal. Then it came to redo the contract the sponsor now know as Sprint decided to cut their offer to $50 million a year. This year that deal expired and the series had to find a new sponsor. The series just signed a deal with Monster Energy Drink for $20 million a year.

So it looks as if sports sponsorship deals are falling in all areas.

you still had 6-5 teams in them. But they were from the SEC or PAC-12 usually.

They have but when the networks can find cheaper fillers which produce the same number then many of the bowls will be gone. Right now even the smaller bowl are getting ok TV numbers.

What's more surprising, Mississippi State in a bowl with a losing record? Or, it being MSU's APR that got them there?

It's true. Stadiums may struggle with ticket sales, but ratings are pretty decent. That's why ESPN launched all these new bowls that got us where we are. I imagine ESPN does pretty decent over the holidays with ratings.
