Decision to cut a sport looming
The Administrative Task Force is looking for ways to make the athletic department more self sufficient and has been tasked with making a recommendation by next May on whether to cut a male nonrevenue sport.

While that sounds dramatic I think it is something athletic departments need to consider all the time.

RE: Decision to cut a sport looming
If they do cut one, my guess would be tennis, soccer or baseball. I think the BoT needs to get a plan together to get attendance up with QUALITY students, who stay and get a degree.

Give ISU a call and see what they are doing. ISU's enrollment, incoming test scores and graduation rates are at a all time high.

How about they cut five high priced administrators instead? That never seems to happen............

+ 1

The most expensive non-revenue sport would likely be baseball. If you cut that program you are saving what $300k per year from athletics...

BUT then you are cutting athletic scholarships for student where that money is actually going TO the university. So really you are actually saving something closer to $200k per year. While also hurting the image of the athletic program.

I would much rather see one $100k+ position in the office than any SA cuts.

It would be wrestling. The AAC doesn't have it as a sport....

If the above list was in the private sector it would be 1/3 the size.

Unless I counted wrong, 50 people, versus the website's heading for sports: seven for men and nine for men. Yeah, hard to justify all these people's salaries versus reducing the number of student-athletes.
One big question, IF dropping a sport is such a necessity, how come STF's great Master (bation) Plan never even hinted at such a move?
If you're going to drop baseball, why bother with relocating McKinzie Field?; if men's and women's tennis are not a priority, why list a "new tennis complex"? why show the location for a new Olympic Sports Complex if wrestling, women's gymnastics, men's or women's golf, have a limited future? If it's all to be paid for "from 100% private funding/donations" as HuskieJohn re-stated in another thread, then what difference does the state budget crisis have to do with any kind of announcement, even if it would be to say "some aspects of the initial plan have been amended."

Not cut, but two VPs just announced they are leaving:

In the grand scheme of things, will it matter? No one is following men's tennis, soccer, cross country, etc. We can barely get people to show up to NIU Football and men's basketball.

If there are 2 more Women's sports right now than Men's, why the hell are they axing another Men's sport?!?

Are you really totally oblivious to Title IX?

I would guess he's not. Rather, he's indirectly questioning the foolishness that is Title IX.

If it means cutting a women's sport to even out the number of men's and women's sports, I'm okay with that. But I am not in favor of cutting women's sports over men's sports to save money. I am a proponent of Title IX and believe that women's sports add so much to college sports. If it weren't for Title IX, would we have women's volleyball, basketball, soccer, and gymnastics? Maybe not. Women's basketball is my favorite sport at NIU - even over football and men's basketball. It is truly a joy watching the women play, and I'm looking for great things to come with Coach Carlsen.

It matters to those men's tennis players, soccer players, and cross-country runners.

While I understand it is simply shouting into the wind around here most of the time, NIU has an Athletic Department, not just a Football Department.

The cross country team had one of its best seasons in school history this past year and had a runner qualify for nationals. That program is doing some big things under the current coach. It is too bad not many have noticed the success.

Title 9 call for general access and "equality", but not necessarily spending the same amounts on woman's and men's sports right? Sounds like the NIU admin is showing extra title 9 teeth on its own, not cool.
