RE: The Band Must Be There
I agree the Finance guy shouldn't be running the University decision making. Just saying that everyone hates the one in control of the money at some time or other because the money pool isn't unlimited and the answer sometimes is No.

I wish our reporting structure at JMU would mirror what most other schools have so the Athletic Dept could make more things happen and in quicker fashion. Of course that would mean a new President is needed because I have no faith in Jon Alger as a competent decision maker regarding sports. Just imagine him trying to throw a 25 yard spiral. 04-jawdrop

I would imagine most, if not all, the Cheerleaders could throw a spiral better.

How much of that was NCAA money??

I was told it was $250k as if it was spent by JMU. I am not presenting this as fact but only that this is how it was shared. I did not write the check so I can't 100% confirm.

What money is used to repay those bonds?

Funding is money. Bonds are essentially financing.

It is still funding. The money was paid by bond investors and must be paid back through revenues. Do you know for a fact that this line item is paid by student fees?

Come on dude.

I have been out with Charlie King and I can promise you his bar tab ain't much.

You are the king of cherry-picking on this board. "Admin" refers to the administrative team, not just the non-rooting Charlie King. I bet there was a very substantial cost outside of room expense for our admin team at the Westin Stonebriar that week.

I am pretty sure you singled out Charlie in one of your posts and I responded to that so I am not sure how I get the tag you gave me above.

Is your argument that the admin should stay home so more band members can attend?

Really sorry that you feel you need to direct your anger toward the administration at me. Despite what you may think, I disagree with the administration at times. I have expressed that on these boards many times.

I have served on the Duke Club board so I learned through that experience that those in charge are far more competent than I previously realized. There is so much information that does not get out to everyone and before you say anything, yes, the administration could do a better job of communicating but don't most misunderstandings occur because of poor communication?

Our administration is pretty good. Not perfect but pretty good. I have seen that demonstrated time and time again. If you ever speak face to face with Charlie you will find him to be a straight shooter. I don't always agree with his decisions but he doesn't run from them in conversation. I do respect what he has accomplished for our university. It is substantial and he will be sorely missed when he retires. That is not brown nosing. That is a statement of fact.

I think this post clearly articulates my point of view on our admin as well- especially with regard to CK. Would I like to see a better "leader" at the top? Yes. But, I believe JA has grown, to a degree, in his role and is improving.

RE: The Band Must Be There
I'm still completely confused by the relative ignorance of what I think is the main argument in play here.

A financial decision was made by Charlie King. A non-trivial amount of people disagreed with that decision.

When presented with an opportunity to collaborate on ensuring a future unpopular decision (in theory) wouldn't even have to be made by him courtesy of outside funding, Charlie King ignored all efforts.

Is someone trying to present a reasonable defense for this?

Since you used "Charlie" I will assume there's a relationship?

There are people of influence outside athletics that feel the opposite, thinks 20 years is way too long and Mr. King and a small group of his friends on the BOV should have "retired" years ago. He has "the ear" of many people but not always the correct ear. I don't know the man so I can't give an opinion but from what I've heard, he sounds like the kind of guy you either love or you hate.

Regardless of how they spin all this MRD/Pep Band stuff, it's unprofessional how it was handled. In my line of work, people lose their jobs over that kind of stuff.

It wont happen but I think it would be great for roughly half the MRD members not to show up for one of those high school recruiting trips.

Yeah, I know they wouldn't do that, just they way the pep band protected Chad by quietly going along with the AD's actions at the beginning of the season. They aren't the protesting type of people. I guess that's why the AD does what they do...no repercussions.

Maybe I'm old school but ever happened to "Moral Fortitude"?

Apologize if it has been discussed, but can you summarize the issue of how it was handled? Did they commit for everyone to go and then at the last minute say only a subset could go?

I am a fan of the MRD's as much as the next guy, but this thread has gone on way too long. It shouldn't be longer than the thread of the Championship game, this is after all a sports message board. Let's move on & end this thread please, thanks.

Man second time today. Hey guys, message boards are not for discussion. Let's all go back to blindly supporting our teams and let. this. die.

You want to tell me why you haven't popped into a 265 post thread like "D-Hub" to insist that we stick to sports?

Because he thinks the band nerds should stop posting on a sports board.

RE: The Band Must Be There
seems like as good a time as ever to share this recent article on the value and tradition of college pep bands: https://www.collegemarching.com/content/...ball-games

in particular the part noting "sometimes the pep band IS the student section", this couldn't be more true for JMU and the fact that part of our admin wants to limit their presence is INSANE.

Most of the story is discussed earlier in the thread but a few key points

JMU doesn't send any band to the NDSU game because they are saving the money so they can go to the NC game

Admin say's they will only send 200 to Frisco with no reason given.

Admin says Frisco didn't give enough seats for band, adds 50 spots because enough people complained.

Admin says 250 max is due too cost.

Groups of people offered money to send more MRD's Some MRD's offered to pay their own way to free up funds for others. Admin ignores everyone.

MRD's take a lot of personal time to market JMU. Members feel unappreciated and used by AD decision regarding the NC trip.

No official statement issued by the Admin or Alger to the MRD's other than saying they couldn't afford it.

I understand Scott Rikers is going out of is way to try to paint the Admin is a positive light but these kids pretty much know what happened and who is responsible for the decisions.
