Essentially he is an OK coach who has proved that he can't get a team to the NCAA's. Not so sure why some people still don't understand this.

He has a contract through the 2020-21 season, which means UT is obligated to pay him for four more years. Can't figure out what in the world O'Brien was thinking. There certainly isn't another school that wants to hire him.

When O'Brien gave Coach K that contract extension, they were coming off a 27-7 season with a first place finish in the MAC. Makes sense to me to give a coach an extension after that success.

Not really because that success still didn't include an NCAA appearance. O'Brien, who has accomplished much, has an annoying habit of extending coaches contracts after 1 good season. I understand as a "mid-major" you have to sometimes extend a coach in order to appease them to stay longer but sometimes you can roll the dice and play the wait and see game. The talk of Coach K perhaps being replaced is a serious topic and one this board could have an dialogue about...

I miss the days of the rolling three year contract. A year added if season was acceptable, not added if not. Two bad in a row and u are gone or a lame duck

Again.... we were at a championship level with Kowalczyk back when we won the MAC Championship.
And collapsed in the tournament....

That just doesn't work in the recruiting world today. Every coach will use that against UT or any other school that keeps a coach in potentially continuous lame duck status. That's why multi-year deals with a negotiated buyout is the norm, even for mid- and low-majors.
