Fertitta wanted more data on other candidates before he would even consider an in-house hire. It was nothing against Orlando or Applewhite. It was business.

So they hired a Texas alum and former qb. Houston is the coach training school for Texas

I still can't believe Fleck stayed put. Not even being willing to consider the Cincinnati job is a mistake. History shows that MAC coaches who jump straight to the P5 end up coaching at schools like Purdue, Syracuse, Wake Forest, and Iowa State. Dave Doeren probably lucked out the most of any MAC coaches, ending up at NC State. Meanwhile, AAC coaches have moved on to schools like Texas, Virginia Tech, Oregon, Tennessee, etc. Even Baylor is a better job than most of the schools MAC coaches have ended up at.

If Fleck would have stepped foot on Cincinnati's campus, he would have taken the job.

He was just too scared to leave his room. Your President should have offered him a car just for showing up, like those time share companies do.

He's gonna be waiting on that opening for a while. js

That's what I'm thinking.

He wasn't even on our long list at all....... let alone a list that had him ranked higher than Applewhite.

If we really wanted Charlie Strong, he would be the coach at UH...we said thanks...but no thanks.

Thats total BS and not even an ounce of truth. Charlie interviewed with one school and one only. Hell, he didnt even take calls from most schools. His wife is from Lakeland, which is next to Tampa. AS soon as the Bulls called, he flew over here.
We actually started having discussions with him before Taggart announced he was gone. He never entertained any other offers at all.

Just because you didn't want him doesn't make the guy you hired better!!!

Memphis Hired Josh Pastner over Scott Drew...

Hired Larry Porter over Hugh Freeze...

Correct. He was on the UH "long list". He did not make the shorter list. No idea if he expressed no interest or if we just felt he wasn't the best fit. There was certainly no interview. My feeling was always that he was an odd pick for UT (or really any Texas school). He is, however, a perfect fit for any Florida school (or really any school in the Southeast).

Right, because there were no other offers to entertain.

I said USF made the #1 hire based on Strong's ties to Florida and his success at Louisville, but to see it attempted to be spun as a victory over other schools because you got something they didn't want is laughable.

We NEVER wanted Strong that's what I'm saying. We didn't consider him a good enough coach to even call in for an interview.

We really only entertained Holgorson (WV locked him up), Briles (shot down due to the Baylor situation), Miles (not sure exactly what happened but it didn't go well enough for him), Kiffin (probably could have been the coach but I'm guessing we got scared off by something), Orlando (named the interim coach) and Applewhite (the one who proved he was best for the position).

Honestly, Applewhite wasn't my top pick GOING into the search but our leaders felt he was best qualified for carrying over the momentum we had built.

That's what I'm thinking.

And Fertitta will get his long term coach at UH (if he wins). A win-win for both schools with Applewhite in the wings for UT.

I think Strong could be a great coach at USF but his tenure at UT was awful. For 3 years we all heard about youth being a huge reason they weren't successful but the issue is they actually seemed to get worse year over year.

Compare that to Penn St who had an even younger team and went 11-2 and won the B1G title.

I think we could have done better than MA but maybe he will prove me wrong.
