Good Job Mike Bohn!
None of us know how successful our new football coach will be, but I feel pretty good about the choice.

I think,, we have to give Mike Bohn credit for the way he orchestrated this transition with dignity and class.. These things can get messy with the departing coach and the selection of the new coach can turn into circus... None of that happened.. The whole transition was positive,, which is the way Mike Bohn does things.....

One of the most important factors in selecting Luke Fickle was the support he got from the HS coaches throughout the state... The importance of the HS coaches can't be under estimated, it was the factor in Houston selecting Major Applewhite...

Texas high school coaches are a powerful lot. Tom Herman has one on his staff, Charlie Strong had one on his, and new Baylor head coach Matt Rhule‘s first hire in Waco was the president of the Texas high school coaches’ association.
Lone Star high school coaches’ power stretches even beyond simply getting on college staffs, however. They have the power to scuttle prospective coaching tenures before they happen.
That’s according to Houston board chairman/Cougars booster Tilman Fertitta. Speaking to KILT-AM in Houston on Friday night, Fertitta said high school coaches’ push for Major Applewhite is what put the Coogs’ offensive coordinator over the top of Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin.
“The Texas high school football coaches bombarded our athletic director (Hunter Yurachek) and said: We want our kids to play for Major Applewhite,” Fertitta said, via ESPN. “Here’s a guy that’s been on the big stage, he was the quarterback at the University of Texas, he has a great relationship with the coaches and high school football in Texas. Lane does not. That was an ‘X’ against Lane compared to Major.
“Continuity in the program, the kids, the recruits today playing wanted Major Applewhite. They let it be known. It was just one thing after another that had steamrolled to Major.”
Judging by Applewhite’s Twitter feed, it was hard to argue against that logic. The new Houston head coach tweeted support from two key Cougars recruits and a current Houston player who, incid

I sent Bohn a note of congratulations. It was only proper as I had done a whole lot of bitching about CTT.

If the worst mistake Bohn makes in his UC career is sticking with Tuberville for an extra season, he will have been a pretty good AD.

Especially considering the position we were in -- trying to show stability while trying to get in the Big 12.

I'm continually mystified why Lane Kiffin is considered a serious candidate anywhere. He's got all the baggage of Bobby Petrino but the head coaching record of Charlie Weiss.

Posting this here. Good as anywhere: http://www.cleveland.com/osu/2016/12/how...at_ci.html

Consistent themes in everything I read about Coach Fick:
  • He's a recruiting machine. He should rake in Ohio and Florida. This could be mutually beneficial for OSU and UC. OSU gonna OSU, but I think OSU would rather see the guys that don't make the cut at OSU end up on UC's roster instead of a B1G opponent's roster.
  • He knows how to develop talent. He has an established record of finding lower rated prospects and developing them into studs. This could be his most valuable attribute at a place like UC.
  • He's devoted to building a program, not finding a stepping stone. We'll see if that holds.
  • Related note: he wants to be in Ohio and has strong family ties here.
  • He has a lot of connections to quality assistant coaches. I expect to see a good team around him.
  • There are legitimate questions about his ability to be the CEO. It didn't go well last time. How will he handle adversity this time?

You raised a lot of great questions, IMO. Adding on to this question, how will be handle adversity with his own staff that he gets to choose?

I don't disagree. My biggest criticism/concern with him is that he has a record of being a great supporter/follower but a mediocre leader. How does he handle it when he's calling all the shots?

There's lots of room to win with the kids who don't quite get Ohio State offers. Dantonio has done great with those players at Michigan State. Fickell's experience and contacts in Ohio will be a huge asset there, and I'd expect him to hire a staff with lots of Ohio roots. He won't beat Ohio State for players, but he might take the next level of player. And Urban Meyer would probably be happy to see those players go to Cincinnati rather than a Big Ten foe.

Yes. The weakness of the ranking services is that they are much more about where a player is now than where he can be his junior & senior years with proper development. Look at our players who have stuck in the NFL. IIRC, they weren't 4 or 5 star recruits.
