One of my all-time favorite places to eat lunch on Saturday in New Orleans is not in the Quarter. It's The Camilia Grill, at the end of St Charles Ave, and I've been eating there off and on since 1977. It's a little diner that opened in 1946. Your wife will love the old --but original-- beautiful building that's full of southern charm, complete with white picket fence out front. The waiters all wear White jackets with bow ties. EXTREMELY COOL!! And when I said it's "at the end of St Charles Ave", I mean it's LITERALLY at the end of St Charles Ave, just past Tulane University and Loyola U. Technically, it's at 626 S Carrollton Ave, where S Carrollton Ave and St Charles meet. It's in the Tulane Univ area. Check it out.

Take the wife and kids. It's DIFFERENT, which is exactly what you are looking for in New Orleans. They'll like it and they'll think you are THE MAN! (But I won't tell 'em any different.)

You are right. Lot of good places outside of downtown. This is a good one.

RE: Where to eat in New Orleans for the bowl game?
For years I used to go the New Orleans on business with a large expense account in tow... While the French Quarter dining is must try experience, my favorite seafood restaurant is Deanies (the original one in Bucktown).

Deanies Seafood Bucktown

A word from experience, you're from out of town, more then likely staying at a hotel.. Order the half portions (full orders are humongous) and leftovers brought back to your hotel room, well let's just say that's not a good idea (Especially Seafood).

Debris
Ever picked the shavings off a freshly carved roast? When a customer asked Simon Landry to add the bits of roast beef that had fallen into the gravy while he was carving it to his sandwich, he replied “you mean some of the debris?” And just like that, another definitive Mother’s term was coined.

Ah, okay. It's a pork or beef roast po-boy with gravy. Easy enough, those are popular all over south Louisiana. At Mae's Cafe debris was debris.......chopped and stewed cow innards. Good stuff.

You bet. Got to go to Parkway. Also, Mandina's on Canal near Carrollton. Venezia on Carrollton near intersection with Canal. Clancy's uptown near Audubon Park corner of Webster and Annunciation. Patois' uptown near Audubon Park corner of Webster and Laurel. Vincent's on St. Charles. Sunday Brunch at Carrollton Market near intersection of St Charles and Carrollton. And that is just the beginning of my list.

Comfort food cooked with an eclectic style go to the Cow Bell. Carrollton neighborhood on Oak Street at the corner of Eagle Street just before where Oak crosses Leake Street along the river.

You actually have to look for a bad meal in NOLA.

However, there was a place on bourbon street, that i enjoyed a steak while on the balcony watching the chaos below and it was a once in a lifetime experience. That steak was really good, but i don't remember the name of the place.

You were clearly eating at the wrong places...in my five years in New Orleans I only had one bad meal--at a Filipino restaurant in Mid-City.

(Even though I grew up a Marshall fan, I'm a Tulane grad)

I agree with everything else on this list:

Especially Camillia Grill for breakfast/lunch (We go here each year after running the Crescent City Classic 10K)

Additionally, almost every John Besh restaurant in the city that I've been to has been great. (Especially Pizza Dominica and the Shrimp and Grits at Luke)
